Sony raises PS3 price in Canada?

From gamespot.com:

Source: A short story at Gamers Reports pointing to product listings at the online stores of Best Buy and Future Shop.

The official story: "Although the suggested retail price (SRP) of the PlayStation 3 in Canada has not changed, some Canadian retailers have chosen to increase their retail price as a result of the weaker Canadian dollar. This increase is solely at the discretion of the retailer, as Sony Computer Entertainment Canada has not issued a price increase."--An SCEC representative.

It's almost like Sony can't catch a break with the PS3.

Is the PS3 in high-demand in Canada?  If it's like things are here in the US, it isn't.  This would not follow the law of supply and demand, as they won't sell as many with higher prices attached.  The opportunity cost of the PS3 is allready out-of-whack (when compared to the 360 and especially the Wii).  This won't help.

I don't think this deals with supply and demand as much as inflation. If the value of the Canadian dollar goes down the price for goods goes up. This would mean, the price of every console goes up, not just the PS3.

I am not exactly sure how this is pertinent to the PS3 or Sony.

It isn't,  but "Canadian retailers raise prices due to weak Canadian dollar" Doesn't bash Sony at all, where's the fun in that?

But the price of all consoles did not go up.  Only the PS3's.  Units are easy to come by now.  Raising the price by $50 is NOT a good thing.  But it's only 3 chains that are gouging and everyone else is at MSRP.

I'm sure this is sony's fault for putting such a small profit margin on a expensive product. Sony is blaming the retailer, but if the retailer is only making $10 on a $659 purchase how is that fair to them. Just because sony smack the RRP on it doesn't mean it's a fair price for the retailer to make a reasonable profit. With only a tiny mark up, why must the retailer suffer.

Also this quote is a key sign of wrong doing on sony's part:

"some Canadian retailers have chosen to increase their retail price as a result of the weaker Canadian dollar."

A weak dollar doesn't affect the retailer, they buy and sell their consoles in their local currency. A weaker Canadian dollar would only affect Sony's Canadian Distributor who buys the consoles direct from the Sony Japan in Japanese Yen. Obviously Sony Canada is passing on the expense to the retailer and leaving the retailer with basically no profit margin, hence the price increase.

Sony should either, reduce the wholesale cost for their Canadian distributor, or Sony Canada need to increase the RRP to allow decent profit margins so that retailers can make their bread and butter.

The way I understand it, is all consoles have $0 profit margin for retailers. They make their money from software and add-ons. Hence, the big ass bundle packs for the 360 launch.

If Sony is at fault, it is because they don't have any good games or add-ons that the stores can make money from, so they are trying to get some from the hardware.

The PS3 units in my city in Canada are not selling, people are getting a wii or a 360. The wii appears to be purchased by people that would not usually buy a console, so it is great news for the gaming industry.

I don't know anyone that owns a PS3, every single person that had a PS2 is going to get either a wii or a 360.
