Sony cannot lose, the playstation name is too big and too well known...the public will buy any old shite that say "playstation".
Give it a year and it will take the lead again.
you're right that the Playstation name is well known but you have to consider how it's well known
The temperament of American consumers is quite fickle... Take Michael Jackson for instance (no seriously) He went from a consistently chart-topping musician that the public proclaimed to be the king of pop and almost overnight became a complete laughing stock, all while still retaining his name recognition. His albums sell like crap now, all because the public perception of him changed, but he's still as much of a household name as he ever was.
From my own observations, last generation it was "cool" to own a PS2 and to be a fan of Sony. It's what most everyone had, it's where all the good games were, even non gamers would pick it up because it was just something everyone had. Like some kind of fashion trend you were somehow uncool if you didn't own one or at least liked them.
Now the "cool" thing is to hate on Sony. Seriously the popular thing in video games right now is to make fun of Sony and rub it in their face... their name is just as popular as it ever was but the difference is now it's popular for a different reason, and I think it's a larger Sony problem (root kit, exploding batteries, etc.) not just the Playstation brand.

This generation is certainly interesting... Sony seems to have lost quite a bit of clout in both the American and Japanese Markets and honestly I see the Wii being the run away success this go around, with MS on their heals in nearly every market but Japan... My prediction is that Nintendo and Sony will essentially swap places in terms of market share, and MS will gain a little bit overall but not enough to take #1 in any market before the next generation.
