Hard Drive Swapping... Possible?
« on: February 03, 2020, 03:56:00 AM »

Hey all,

Just a very basic and simple question... I was living in Europe for a while and decided to return to Canada.  While I was in Europe, I purchased a pre-modded (Aladin XT mod chip) XBOX console and I upgraded the hard drive to a 400GB without issue.  Because of uncontrollable circumstances, I couldn't take the XBOX system with me however, I pulled my 400GB drive out and wanted to know if I could simple buy a modded Xbox in Canada (with a different modchip installed) and simply install my 400GB drive into it and get all my games and dashboard back as if nothing changed?  My box in Europe was a 1.6.  Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Hi,

if you unlocked your harddisk (or if it was unlocked all the time when you used it) than I don't see any problems in installing the disk in another xbox. If it is locked, you have a problem. You will need to know the password to unlock it before you can install it in another xbox. The xbox eeprom.bin file is what you need to calculate that password.

There still is the issue that Europe uses the PAL video system and Canada the NTSC system. I don't really know if PAL games play alright on a modded NTSC xbox. Maybe someone else who reads this can answer that question. I know some games have different folders for PAL and NTSC, so I assume they work on both systems. A quick check of my game cases learns me that there is no sign of PAL on them, so I assume they should be compatible with both systems, but maybe not all games are that way.

regards.

If the drive is locked, you can unlock it with a master password of TEAMASSEMBLY or XBOXSCENE. You have to use all caps.

I agree, it should work with a new chipped Xbox. Make sure it has a BIOS that supports .67 option.

You might have an issue where the new chip's BIOS expects the dashboard to be in a different place then the old one, but that's easily patched up with a Slayers disc or similar.

One problem with transplanting drives is savegame locking (usually applied to all Live content you've downloaded, but also in some odd cases to actual saves). Don't think there's much you can do about this other then stealing the old EEPROM and sticking it in your new box, but chances are it won't affect you anyway.

I tried an NTSC game on my PAL box once. Worked fine. Some 50hz-only PAL games might not like NTSC boxes (which won't go below 60hz), but I doubt there are many of those around (and you can always switch your console if it turns out to be an issue).

I do know that PAL boxes can't do HD, so a lot of people switch theirs to NTSC to get access to the higher resolutions. Haven't heard of any game compatibility complaints arising from this though JezzX does reckon PAL gives a better image.
