That's the only thing I've noticed that's different too.  Still doesn't work with my keyboard sad.gif  (but I think it's the keyboard's fault, not the ps3's)

I dunno, I don't have a tv that's incompatible with 720p.

No update from sony is going to make 720p games run on 1080i only tv's. its a hardware problem and cant be fixed with a Firmware update.

yes exactly... the PS3 simply lacks a hardware scaler and therefore lacks the capability to upscale or downscale games.

Game programmers have to code in support for specific resolutions. So if a game doesn't have code to run in 1080i then it will never support 1080i.

The only way to "fix" this problem is to make a new version of the console with a hardware scaler, though I doubt we'll see that happen any time soon.

Let's hijack this thread to talk about the lack of a Scaler Chip, just to be Clear, a quick scenario.

If I play a game, I have my console set to 720p.
If I throw in a Blu-Ray movie (1080i/p), will it be playing at 480p unless i set my console up to 1080i?

My real question here is, would I constantly have to be switching my settings around going between certain games as well as movies.  The PS3 would be better off setup like the xbox1 where you go into the settings and say what your tv supports, then maybe have the option to select a preferred resolution if the content will scale in both.

Oh yeah, I forgot.

What is the possiblity of them releasing patches for specific games in the future like we frequently get with the xbox?  Would it just be too much of a performance hit to try and get the games into 1080i w/o a scaler?

It really depends on how a game was programed that would determine if they could include a software scaler, though it's highly unlikely considering how processor intensive that kind of operation is.

AFAIK 360 is the only device that can scale realtime content, most of the cheap scalers included with DVD players have lag, which is fine when watching pre-recorded video but useless for video games.

PCs don't even scale realtime content like that of games, they simply render to your desired output resolution. (Though they can scale video content through software).

the hardware scaler is a very unique feature of the 360 and certainly not the norm... Certainly not something I would have expected to see anywhere else.

Firmware, another reason (apart from games & price) I'm waiting a year.

I've waited a year for the 360 (can't afford it atm) and look at the improvements the firmware updates have made to the 360.

Well I hope to see some great improvements with the PS3 firmware over the next year. I just hope they stick to a better schedule and just not randomly release big size firmware updates.
