I'm comparing the two based on if you bought either console now. I realize that the 360 has been out a year, but there's no need to say that the imrovements don't count.

PS3:
-Built-in Blu-ray player
-HDMI
-Standard HDD
-Quiet

360:
-More budgeted price
-VGA
-Fewer problems and failure rates (since it's been out longer)
-More accessories and games

It was his silly attemp at being funny that fell drastically short because he doesn't know what he is talking about.

For all of you people that hang over on this part of the forum that didn't read this article posted by someone else in the 360 general section, you should have a read. You might actually learn something and realize why most of you are nothing more then consumers that have turned into "zombies".  It's the best write up I've seen thus far and as a consumer you owe it to yourself to become educated on the topic.

Xbox360 (entertainment console) 600$ ( 460 with rebate ? smile.gif )
+ Live Marketplace offers movies and videos in HD
+ VGA
+ hd-dvd addon
- HD-dvd addon (No HD sound)
- only 20GB HDD
- Too BIG (powerbrick+console+hddvd addon)

PS3 (entertainment console) 600$
+ Fully functional BD player built in. (that might freeze in movies smile.gif )
+ Built in Power Brick.
+ HDMI 1.3
+ Linux
+ Swappable HDD (third party)
+ Coax out (sound)

Xbox360 (gaming console) Price 300$ (200 with rebate smile.gif )
+ Better Graphics (will probably stay this way especially on cross platform titles)
+ More games out now
+ More Shiny (halo-verse)
+ A more tried online service (costs $$$)
+ Better exclusives coming ( in the minds of a lot of NA's)
+ Rumble
+ Faster read speed on DVD

PS3 (gaming console) Price 500$
+ Free online gaming
+ Bigger Japanese dev Support
+ Better exclusives coming (in my view japs view)
+ Sixaxis
- No rumble
- Slow read speed on BD

This is how I see the differences between the consoles, if you only want to game and don't care about ps3 exclusive your wise to stay away from the ps3.

If your looking for a entertainment console I'd go with the PS3 its a lot sleeker and has a lot better features, this will ring super true if Linux works as it should.

About homebrew:

PS3:
Free compiled homebrew, but unable to access interesting hardware parts (GPU for example)

XBOX360:
Expensive interpreted homebrew (XNA), but able to access interesting hardware parts (GPU for example)

Situation is damn ODD...

Actually the best way to have open source optimized benchmarks running on these two nasties would be to hack them hard...

About financial health of companies:

PS3 (Sony):
Critical, because of delayed PS3 and batteries recall. It's possible Sony loses 40% of PS3 price at each sale... If too many "gamers" purchase a PS3 just in order to play Linux on it, they are finished. Security resistance against piracy attempts will have very important effect on their future. I still don't understand why they allowed homebrew... It's strange and risky. Unrestricted homebrew and high profitable price would have been a more secured way to start a next gen business. Studies show clearly people don't care about price if target is really superior.

XBOX (Microsoft):
Ok. Not profitable yet (probably loses 10% of XBOX 360 price at each sale), but still plenty of cash in reserve.

this is a very stupid thread.  not only will this do nothing more then spark fanboy rants and debates but it will also show how uninformed and ignorant people are.

seeing as how both consoles are going in different directions you can not compare them at face value IMHO.  the ps3 is trying to become the jack of all trades but ends up mastering none and the 360 is a GAME CONSOLE first and foremost first and everything else a distant second.

you want a system to watch movies on, browse the web, and spend a lot of money get a ps3.  you want a great HD gaming system get a 360.

again you can not compare the two.  when there are millions of 360s out vs half a million ps3s which do you think will have the higher percentage of defects?  no system will ever be perfect but tit for tat i would trust a 360 above ANY sony product.

But theres no game out that has 1080p as an option.

1. ALL Xbox 360 games can output it 1080p since the fall update every last one of them including launch titles from last year. Some even support it natively including all of the games that formerly supported 1080i nativly such as Condemned, Tomb Raider Legend, and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

2.The 360's GPU is actually better suited for 1080p graphics then the PS3's is due to the unified shader architecture as opposed to the dedicated shader architecture that the PS3 uses.

QUOTE
When pipelines are forced to go idle because they lack the capability to help another set of pipelines accomplish their task it’s detrimental to performance. This inefficient manner is how all current GPUs operate including the PS3's RSX. The pipelines go idle because the pixel pipes aren't able to help the vertex pipes accomplish a task or vice versa. Whats even more impressive about [the 360's] GPU is it by itself determines the balance of how many pipelines to dedicate to vertex or pixel shader operations at any given time a programmer is NOT needed to handle any of this the GPU takes care of all this itself in the quickest most efficient way possible. 1080p is not a smart resolution to target in any form this generation, but if 360 developers wanted to get serious about 1080p, thanks to Xenos, could actually outperform the ps3 in 1080p. (The less efficient GPU always shows its weaknesses against the competition in higher resolutions so the best way for the rsx to be competitive is to stick to 720P) In vertex shader limited situations the 360’s gpu will literally be 6 times faster than RSX. With a unified shader architecture things are much more efficient than previous architectures allowed (which is extremely important). The 360’s GPU for example is 95-99% efficient with 4XAA enabled. With traditional architecture there are design related roadblocks that prevent such efficiency.

OH BTW TOPIC CLOSED
the last thing we need here is another fanboy flame war.

If you're interested in comparing the to consoles do your own research. or find articles written by people who know what they're talking about (like the article I linked).
