I understand you were talking about the rotating speed, but my point is transfer speed is what matters.  My point is a BR 4x drive would be as fast as a 12X DVD rom.

Aerial density and rotation effect the transfer speeds.  HDDs have better performance because they can cram more data on to the platters, 100GB vs 40GB, yet they are still 7200RPM drives we've had for years.  The heads have to move shorter distances to access data etc.

Nice zombie remark.  I never said the 2X BR was faster than the 12X DVD ROM, but there is more to speed of a drive than the nX.

I don't think he was talking about that. He was simply talking about the amount of sound the drive makes according to speed and the comparisons that people are making to the loud drive in the 360 when you can't compare the two because they don't spin at the same speed. We are not really talking about data transfer. I'm sure he has an understanding of that.

I'm wondering how many tv sets there is that won't accept a 720p but will accept 1080i, would be pretty stupid toby  a tv set that can't upscale from 720p to 1080i, most tv channels are 720p. So hard to say who are the cheap bastards, sony for not puting in a scaler or the tv manufacturer for not doing it. Either way you're sol.

I don't get the ironic part though

Thought some people might find this interesting.  Posted over at 1UP... http://www.1up.com/d...ory?cId=3155303

I sent it first to an admin here because I wasn't sure where to put it but this topic seems like a decent place to bring it up. I find the situation, ironic to say the least.  tongue.gif
Sorry but what do you mean? As long as there is not a xbox 360 game in the DVD drive the system is very quiet.  I don't understand why you would be annoyed when using the hd-dvd drive.

It was already posted and people have made comments in it. look in the other PS3 sections.

Early HD sets could display 1080i and not 720P, but they would scale the 720P singnal to 1080i.  Some of those early sets don't have a built in scaler and in that case they can't convert the 720P signal to 1080i.

I just think it is horrible that they don't care to support a very good and widely used format.  The lack of scaling is a big hurt. Now I do understand that the developers of these games could do the necessary work to allow the game to run at 1080i BUT again this is why game programmers hate working with Sony.  See when you can do less work and allow the hardware to handle the scaling (such as in the 360) you end up having much happier programmers. Maybe this is why they need all that Blu-Ray disk space.

Anyone with this situation can wait for a solution from the programmers, play at standard-def, or go buy a television that supports 720p or go all out on a 1080p set.  You can't deny that that is a significant financial blow to someone that just bought an expensive gaming machine for it's HD gaming.  Not to mention that this could cause unnecessary descaling and rescaling for those televisions that don't have input jacks for 1080p but yet still support 1080p resolutions (I can think of some Sony televisions that fit this bill). And as has been stated the lack of any scaler is a really big downfall from the movie side.

I'll just drop it at that, but it IS a big deal.

i know what you meant but what your talking about is not what is taking place.  what im talking is.

about the zombie remark, it was not directed towards you so if your not a zombie then no reason to take it personal.  ignorance is bliss in their world and its the one reason you cant reason, talk, debate, or even interact with them.

Depends on the TV, but I'm thinking you will get 1080i.  Does your TV have a built in scaler?

This was all in theory, I only have a 19" PC monitor with VGA, so the question doesn't apply to me. I was just curious.

Games running at 720p which are the majority will look good on TVs that are running native 720p but most LCDs on the market are 1366 by 768 so those will look like crap to.

You do realise that the tv scales the resolution to fit its pixel arangement dont you. This isnt the job of the outputting device, otherwise you would neeed to support a heap of different resolutions.

I saw that you had your xbox360 next to your PS3 so how much better would you rate the graphics of your PS3 compaired to your xbox360? Is it that much better?
Are you sure about that? So is that what there talking about when they say there is no scaler in the PS3. 1080p TV's havent been out that long. I purchased my Mitsu 1080 DLP only a year ago 1080i and the PS3 won't convert to 1080i? THAT SUX has this been confirmed? I'm better off sticking with my 360at 1080i.

Does you TV have a built in scaler?  If yes, the it will display fine on your TV.

Graphics on par with 360.
