First off, let me say that Sony threw a really nice event for its G.A.P members. The location was really nice, the corner of Wooster st. and Houston in Manhattan. Since it was the corner building, passers by could look in and see the set up, the games etc. They had nice looking women serving appetizers, and overall the atmosphere was real nice.
They had all the PS3 systems hooked up to Sony Bravia 1080p LCD's, and let me tell you, those TV's are OFF THE HOOK and IMHO, the very best television you can buy right now.
The Console: They were in a case underneath the TV's, the front was glass but the back was a thin metal covered with ventilation holes. Putting your hand up against the mesh, you could feel some heat. I asked the sony rep about the heat issue, and he said, and i quote "If you have a 360 the ps3 is about the same in terms of how much heat it pumps out". That said, My cousin and I were there for a full 2 hours, and there was not one hint or sign of system crashes or failure.
The controller: In a word, Disappointing. They are the dual shock 2 stick, (without the shock) with modified L2 and R2 buttons to be more like triggers. The problem is that it wasnt either, and that in between feeling just doesnt feel right at all. They are just like the L2 and R2 buttons on the dual shock, BUT instead of depressing INWARD, they kind of SLANT in to feel more like a trigger. Because the plastic is hard and flat, they just dont feel like triggers at all, and they go in so far that your finger slips off them. Its just wierd. The controllers are very lightweight, and just dont feel that well put together. Thats about it for the "Sixaxis".
The games: There were alot of games there, but NO EA SPORTS titles!! What was there was NBA 07 (sony), NBA 2K7 and NHL 2K7, F1, Motorstorm, Resistance, Sonic the hedgehog, Lair, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Call of Duty 3, Genji, Mobile suit Gundam, Untold legends, and i think thats about it.
Quick rundown of the games:
Resistance: Easily the most polished launch title. The gameplay was VERY smooth, and the graphics were nice. As told the game was running in 720p. They had this game on 2 TV's, one of which the PS3 was hooked up online. The sony rep went online, and joined a room called "NY DEMO". There were 40 people in the game, and there was virtually NO LAG. Real smooth. The negatives to me for this game were the inanimate objects. They just seemes "painted on" and the textures were non existant. I also saw on occasion, the same ol' collision detection problems that we see on every console, parts of characters disappearing into walls and other objects etc. It didnt happen alot to be a negative, but it did happen. Overall a very nice game, looks very good and plays real smooth.
NBA 2K7 and NHL 2K7: These games were virtually identical to the 360 versions. I mean identical. In fact, for some reason the PS3 versions had noticeable "jaggies". This was evident in the outline of the player models. Other than that, the games looked and played exactly like their 360 counterparts.
NBA 07: This game was very clean, running in 1080p. It played real smooth also. The jumpshots were a little different in a sense that you had a "slider" appear over the shooters head that you had to stop when it was in the "green" for accuracy (think baseball pitching sliders). While the game looked and played very nice, i dont think it is on par gameplay wise with NBA 2K7.
F1: Surprisingly, in terms of graphics, this game looked very nice also. When it rained the water would stick to the screen just like a windshield, it was a real nice effect. While the game was very crisp, the actual cars and environments werent all that impressive. Nonetheless a nice looking game.
Motorstorm: Graphics were very nice and detailed, cool effects like mud from the car(s) and dry dirt like clouds of dust would hit the screen. Only thing about this game, is that it played VERY SLOW, almost like WTF?? A racing game this slow? I dont know what the purpose of this was, maybey it was so it would be easier to steer the vehicles with the motion sensing.
Lair: This game was still pretty early in development, but they had one playable level and it looked very nice. You could fly around with the dragon for aerial combat, or land and fight soldiers or some other creatures on the ground.
Other than that they had 3 ps3's hooked up to smaller LCD's, where you could browse the User interface and check stuff out. I opened up the web browser and it seemed pretty cool. Nice feature.
The only thing i will say right now, is that while the ps3 games look nice, they are exactly what im seeing on my 360, exactly. The multi platfrom games were identical, and the first party exclusives were nice but again, nothing grounbreaking or different. If you have stayed on current gen Xbox or ps2 and have not seen or played the 360 in HD, you will be impressed. If you have been playing 360 in HD the quality is just about the same ish, and that was the concensus from the majority of people i spoke to. One guy was more excited about the blu-ray movies than the games. He mentioned the fact that a stand alone blu-ray player would be 1000, so the ps3 was a bargain for him. He also mentioned that he had bought a new home theatre receiver, with 3 HDMI inputs and had 1080p capability, so i guess he was a home theatre nut.
Overall the PS3 games looked nice, but nothing different from what alot of us have been playing. I guess time will tell.
The first write up was done by my cousin on another forum and my comments are below:
First off lets talk about the consoles heating issues. I felt the back of every system running there tonight and every single one of them was blowing "HOT" not warm air. The grate on the back was hot to the touch.
With the exception of one or two games I noticed some horrible jaggies going on. The 2k games were the worst. They were very pixeled with white "noise" going around the player characters.
The Controller, it is the same old story from everyone who has touched it. It felt like a PS2 controller but MUCH lighter and cheap feeling. The trigger buttons are not exactly triggers at all but a slanted flat button that does not have the same responsiveness that all the other buttons displayed.
From the lineup that was present every game looked to be on the same EXACT level as a 360 game.
The game that I was most impressed with was resistance. Resistance is a cross of Call of Duty and Halo 2 graphically. The game is not photo realistic it is very cartoonish. I liked the way the game played and flowed. It very MUCH reminded me of Halo 2, I am a huge Halo fan and this game is very fun to play. The online 40 player matchup displayed very minimal lag, some ghosting occured but all in all the games online play was on point.
The single player mode was a good looking game but it is not something I would say is a generation leap. The walls and secondary objects displayed did not feel 3d at all but more of art displayed.
I liked the PS3 interface it was smooth and very user friendly but I personally prefer the 360 interface better.
I am on the fence about selling my pre-order with the only thing keeping me on the side of keeping it is resistance. I know I will enjoy the multiplayer aspect of this game. And the inclusion of campaign co-operative play makes my day.
The PS3 will be a great system but if the 360 is an xbox3do than the ps3 is a ps3do.
Oh one last thing...
When asked if my cell phones Bluetooth headset is capable with the ps3 the Sony rep said yes.
Hopefully that is a true statement.
Sorry it took so long but the wife had other "plans" when I got home lol.
