Correct me if I'm wrong but when playing a game you're not using the Xbox 360's GUI now are you?

I can understand it taking up more memory when you're in the dashboard but that wouldn't effect games because you're never running the games and the dashboard at the same time.

VERY nice link though thax... beerchug.gif
I'm not exactly sure either. But, I thought the Xbox 360 service was always on. I'm not sure if when you press the Guide button, it loads the GUI all over again or just calls on it.

PS3 O/S Memory Consumption

I don't know if this article is accurate, but that would indicate that the PS3 uses about 100 MB of it's memory for the O/S, which is rather large.

well those have been the same figures that have been released time and time again so they had to have come from somewhere.  like i said though, it did not come directly from sony.  considering all the bells and whistles that sony is including with their dashboard, this doesnt seem that far fetched.

i wish he can elaberate, but i do think there is a relation between this and the comment M_heal made about the two being WAY different.

From my understanding the Guide and the Dash are two completely separate applications if you will. The guide handles functions such as alerts, text messaging, voice messaging, basic personal settings and music streaming

the dash handles media center extending, audio ripping, launching of XBLA games, content delivery, system settings,  video playback, audio plaback with full screen visualizations, etc.

I'm fairly certain the Guide is an application itself that is always running, and the Dashboard is a 2nd application that runs only when you're not playing a game.

the reserved memory on BOTH systems does NOT involve framebuffers.

further than that I cannot comment without breaking NDA.

Thanx Thax for posting that article, its the same one i was referring to and I couldn't find it.  Anyways from what I interpreted, the 360 calls on the "guide" at anytime and it only trakes about 5% of the 360 resources while the dashboard takes a huge amount of resources. The guide and the dash are separate. Twisted already went over this. Sony's approach is to make the dash available at all times. Which explains why it takes so much resources. Atleast this is just a theory and probably utter crap but I just wanted to share it tongue.gif

i was looking some list where games doing true 1080p @60fps with PS3:

NBA 07
Virtua Tennis 3
Ridge Racer 7
Gundam:Crossfire
Tony Hawk project 8
Grand Turismo HD
DMC4
Heavanly Sword
Motorstorm
Vitural Fighter5
Gundam:Crossfire
Lair
MGS4
Resistance:Fall of Man

some of them are launch titles, so people developing above don't have this RAM issue? i was looking at some Ridge Racer and Motorstorm videos, they looked incredibly smooth. anyways, like i said if they (Micro$oft & Co) don't fix the crappy 30fps and still suffering from v-sync then PS3 will just own it.

Whoa; that is horribly incorrect.

- NBA 07: NO
- Virtua Tennis 3: YES
- Ridge Racer 7: YES
- Gundam:Crossfire: NO
- Tony Hawk project 8: DON'T KNOW
- Grand Turismo HD: YES
- DMC4: NO
- Heavanly Sword: NO
- Motorstorm: NO
- Vitural Fighter5: NO
- Gundam:Crossfire: NO
- Lair: YES,  BUT NOT AT 60 FPS
- MGS4: THEY ARE SHOOTING FOR 1080P
- Resistance:Fall of Man: NOT CONFIRMED.  THEY ARE SHOOTING FOR 1080P.  AND NOT AT 60 FPS, BUT 30 FPS.  IT IS CURRENTLY RUNNING AT 720P @ 30FPS.

This was at the bottom of the article you posted. It seems there could be more being used besides memory and SPE's
"In addition, we did not include any of the information concerning their plans for usage of the PPE core"

i usually would but how would that explain the degraded textures in MGS4?  if they kept the resolution the same as it was originally then i dont think they would have to downgrade the graphics as much as they did.  found a site entirely about MGS4's graphics....
