Does that hold true for the component cables?
According to the spec sheet it only has a "Multi-AV Port" there is no mention of a Digital AV port like the early GameCubes had.
HOWEVER the Multi AV port does have provisions for component video, particular version of both the SNES and N64 supported component video and RGB through the Multi AV port... some versions of those consoles, and all other Nintendo consoles had that featured disabled (for some strange reason).
The Digital AV port on the Gamecube was nothing more then a Japanese D-Terminal connector, which provides a signal similar to VGA... the plug was so huge because it basically had circuitry to converter the VGA like signal to Component video... I would imagine in Japan you could have purchase any old D-Terminal through connector for your 480p gaming, similarly you probably could have imported any D-Terminal to Component converter cable instead of buying the official Nintendo cable.
So the Wii might not have the D-Terminal (aka Digital AV port) but more likely it will simply re-enable Component over multi AV... Personally I prefer the D-Terminal as it provides a slightly better signal, but seeing as the console doesn't even support HD it doesn't make that big of a difference.
EDIT: Actually I take that back... nintendo apparently has gone on record as saying the following wont be wii compatable: Gameboy player, broadband adapter, modem adapter, av cables, and power adapter.
Further I just dug up some photos:

^ 4 Gamecube Controller ports and 2 Gamecube Memory Unit ports (though I'm curious how the wavebird adapters will fit in there, unless the console can connect with them directly, otherwise that might be some kind of ugly)

^ The best picture of the back pannel I can find... I imagine the square to the right is for USB ports, the Square with one rounded edge on the left is for power which means that rectangular shaped one is for AV, and it doesn't look like the Multi-AV OR the Digital AV port from the Gamecube... probably something completely new so Nintendo can make some AV cable profits again (since they've used the same cable design since the NES days)
