Wii Vs. Ps3
« on: September 14, 2006, 09:35:00 AM »

I just saw the details on the wii launch released earlier

Right here if you dont know

I started thinking what are the chances of the wii outselling the ps3?

I'm not looking for fanboy praise, I'm hoping for a good educated discussion.

Sure the wii is gonna have more units on the shelves (no surprise there) but wouldn't it hurt sony if the wii is a greater success earlier on than the ps3 and considering the 360 is already a success.

But your posting this in the ps3 sub forum, what you gonna expect tongue.gif. The Wii will do well, we just have to wait and see what Sony does. They have not impressed me at all lately, now all UK and Europeans have to wait till March 2007 due to stupid blu-ray.

If MS lowers the price of the core to 250 it could really take the wind out of the sails of the wii, or possibly help depending on how many people buy a wii60.

the wii will sell out to hardcore nintendo fans, MS lowering the core wont deter them from buying a wii for the first 6 months.  It might change peoples minds a year from now but not initially(my opinion ofcourse).

No im getting a wii too, although im not the biggest Nintendo fan. Im getting cause a got some extra change left over. Since im not getting a ps3 this year, that will pay for alot of games and accessories. I just can't help but think that since the most expensive console and and the cheapest console are both launching the same time, that its gonna be really interesting interesting to watch smile.gif. What type of press is sony gonna get if the wii takes the holidays by storm. Plus despite the fact that nintendo seems to be doing alot of things right are they no competition for sony? Stuff like this bubbles in my head. biggrin.gif

By the way deftech is right, the price on a nintendo console has never helped before. Lets be honest if you can tolerate nintendo, your gonna by a wii. If you can't then no price is gonna force you to buy it.

OH SHIT! i jus thought of something. If nintendo launches in europe before sony wouldn't that give them the edge?

$250 kinda makes me feel like i'm getting ripped off.

Not that its too much, its just that its too cheap.

The wii isn't much different from the gamecube concerning tech specs. I would rather pay $350 for a console that is up to par with the others than $250 for a console that is basically a gamecube 1.5 w/motion sensor controller.

$250 for the console, $60 for the nun-chuck controller, $40 for a memory card, and $40 for component cable is a WII FREAKING BIT TOO MUCH FOR ME!

Especially when the 360 core system will cost the same with 10x the power and 10x the game selection. Has Nintendo lost it?  blink.gif

blink.gif  the controller doesn't come with the console? and doesn't the wii have built in flash memory? and you dont really need a composite cable because the wii only supports 480p

I missunderstood abou the nun-chuck controller; it will come with the console.

It has 512MB of built in flash memory.  But that is not enough for games saves and emulator games.  It does not come with an HDD, or even have the option afaik.

In order to get 480p you need component or vga cables.  Composite or S-video only supports 480i.

For a system as underpowered as the Wii, doesn't support HD resolutions, and doesn't support DD 5.1 surround sound, $250 is too much.

At that price nintendo are definently making money on their console, whereas both the MS and sony are taking a huge loss on their consoles.

Umm it DOES support DD 5.1, You can use SD cards to expand the memory (you can get 8 gig ones now) and why would anybody on the scene care about the BC? I mean don't you have a modded xbox? Unless you want to play GC games which is hardly anything to get excited bout. The wii pricing is ok for me but I honestly think MS should drop the core pricing so it looks more attractive to the budget gamers. They can do it in japan, how about the other side of the world? biggrin.gif

AFAIK The $250 includes:

1 Wii Console
1 Wii-Mote
1 nunchuck Wii-mote attachment
1 Wii-Sports Game

Additional Wii-Motes cost $40
Additional Wii-Mote attachments costs $20 (this includes nunchuck, zapper, and retro controller)
Video cables will be the same as previous Nintendo consoles
There are no official memory units the system just uses SD cards

It also features 512MB internal memory which IMO is more then enough considering the biggest N64 game was about 32MB and most N64 games are between 4MB and 8MB SNES and Genesis games are substantially smaller and You could probably fit the entire NES catalog in that space.

Also the Wii-Motes include internal memory that save your settings and gamer profile, I'm not sure how much they actually hold but apparently it's enough to contain your profile, and all its settings including your "Mii" Avatar.

Then why are n64 roms so huge? I mean some games are 128mb and my rom collection is about 4.5 gigs.

There were only about 250ish games on the N64... based on estimates a complete rom set would be less than 2gigs.

Are you sure those are 128MB roms and not 128MB zip files that include multiple roms? A lot of emulators will let you zip up your roms to save space.

And on that note, with as cheap as 1gb of flash memory is today, why does it only have 512mb? It better be expandable
