I'll add to that...
Younger kids didnt get playstation 1 for the games, they got it because their friends did. It was the cool thing being talked about on the playground.
I worked at a civic center from 1992 till 2000, and some days I watched the older boys(8 to 12 years old) in an after school program and tossed the football around with them. In doing so, anyone that didnt have a ps1 was ridiculed and cast aside. It was a sad sight.
Kids at that age had no idea what the games were, or what the system offered. They got it because they were told to, or to fit in. I had parents ask me if they thought the ps1 was worth the $$ which means these kids actually went home and told their parents about it. I know I know, that takes place with any toy, but Not to the extent of something thats Sony branded. Surely noone here will deny that(Actually I can think of someone who will, lol).
whats shocking is that this took place in a small suburb that had a total of 6,000 residents, and a very small amount of them being children. The whole school system from 1st - 12th grade consisted of 800 kids. If what I saw was that prevelant in such a small community, its VERY EASY to see why and how ps1 grew. If I didnt see it 1st hand, I wouldnt have believed it.
I brought my saturn in and hooked it up to the projector. Some left the theater room because it wasnt a ps1(which I had at home for Tomb Raider 2). As some left, they told their friends to leave. Some followed, some stayed.
If Sony intended for this to happen, they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. They are THE undisputed kings of marketing. But with that comes lies and broken promises. It'll take another decade for people to see what truly goes on behind closed doors, but mark my fuggin words, that day will come.
