this smells bullshit.

1 . i dont think sony will let an open door to modding. people would buy the ps3 as a super computer to install linux and mythtv for instance... how does sony make money?

Uh...they make money by selling the PS3 of course.

As far as I know, MS are the only people to sell their consoles at a loss at the moment.

All games are going to be published on blu-ray discs?   Man, everything elses sounded good (even if they are half lies), but damn.... looks like the Sony boys will be spending $75+ on their games.

Why?

For example, from http://en.wikipedia....idges_vs._discs

QUOTE
The cost of producing an N64 cartridge was far higher than producing a CD: one gaming magazine at the time cited average costs of twenty-five dollars per cartridge, versus 10 cents per CD

CDs, DVDs, HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs are just factory pressed discs.  Pressing a BR disc will of course cost more than CDs or DVDs, but not that much more.  Nothing short of an N64 v2 will have games costing as much as $75.

It had previously been thought that the PS3 hard drive would be an optional device, as the hard drive on the Xbox 360 is, but Kutaragi was adamant today that the component, which will ship at 60Gb but can be upgraded, is required by the console.

The only other details of the PlayStation 3’s hardware given related to its use of a 60GB hard drive pre-installed with Linux, which will apparently be mandatory for playing games. Interestingly, though, Kutaragi indicated that Sony had not yet decided whether the drive would be shipped with the console or not.

not true, nintendo is the only company that does not sell consoles at a loss.  every other company before sold hardware at a loss and made it back in software sales.  right now sony makes money off of the ps2 but that is after 5 years of it being out, at first sony was losing money per unit sold.  MS has stated in fact that they could start earning a profit for the 360 as early as this year and as late as next year.  with reports coming in that the ps3 will cost sony between $800-$900 to make how much do you think that sony will sell the ps3 to "make money" on it?

Hello smile.gif. Finally we know a little something!!!!

okay the PS3 controller has togo. The 60GB HD probably wont even be utilized like the x360 (custom in game music, game saves etc..). Also it's going to cost a lot of $$$$$. No less that $500 (without HD). I'm not downing the PS3, but i'll need a little more info b4 i even consider buying it. I want some hands on games.

If the Games are all Blu-ray goodbye cheap games. Open up your wallet to $70-$80 games. Scratch one of those babies & u're totally screwed. I'll just take the wait & c approach.

Even if it is a beefed machine, i only care about the games.
To me the only good games on ps2 and ps1 was FF9 (ps1) and Chrono Cross (ps1), all the other games where bad.

Hell if they re-released the snes with HD etc, i would buy it, that console had the best games ive ever played.

But for the linux thing, sounds to me like hmmm, MS's 360 is gonna own our ass in consoles, so lets try and get everyone to get use to linux, so then people will move away from Windows...

ok....
back to my earlier question which was shot down by some mod.....
since we now know ps3 games are in fact going to be on blu ray disc
does this mean that only those with HDMI inputs will be able to play
in this "true" hi-def sony loves? <not really a question,
since its obvious no knows what the F sony is up to but just for
speculations sake.

The PS3 will top the 360 in features? Sure. And in price too.

Merril Lynch put the cost of a PS3 at $900 recently. That was before the HD and wifi. So now the bill of materials has to be up to $1,000. And people are just worried about whether this console will shoot past the $400 or $500 mark.

Note: Price estimate is for parts only. Does not include labor, advertising, shipping.... even if Sony can save themselved on hardware through partnerships, it'll be offset by the other costs... assuming Merril Lynch was at all accurate, we're talking about a system that will cost more like $600-$800. And that's still being conservative, assuming Sony will take a massive loss.

It sounds like it might be the ideal accompaniement alongside my old Phillips CDi smile.gif  about £600 I think that was first time it came out.

Though in its defense, I remember the days when there was imported SNES's at typically £600 (plus inflation now), and paying £110 for a single NeoGeo cartridge.

In some respects...regarding 'copy protection'.....as they obviously acknowledge the fact that they'll sell for a loss for the first x months for the main units......should it turn out that in the year following, they find a way to fully mod and customise it similar to xbox1 because of some modified linux (whereas perhaps homebrew on the 360 may never be an option), then those are going to start selling like hotcakes, at the stage that they at least make profit from the consoles...on top of expecting to win some fanbase if they do a decent xbox live equivalent system, like I keep 2 xboxs, 1 modded, one untouched purely for play on Live service and to replace all the crummy divx players I had around the house

holy expensive!!! lets not forget that anyone that buys one will also have to buy a new hdtv that supports DVI or HDMI hookups, since due to the blue-ray copy protection, only tvs with those connections will work.

the HDCP which you are referring to, is only for movies.

sony already stated it will support SD resolutions (assuming this wont play blu-ray movies through this output)

Why is it so hard for people believe it will support Linux... you DO realize that the PS2 supports Linux right?

Because it does, and it even had a Linux development kid you could buy FROM SONY. It in no way shape or form aids in piracy or "opening the door" at all, if anything help keep the thing from getting hacked because NONE of the linux nuts bother trying to hack the bios to run it (and opening the door for other things).

When you install Linux on an Xbox you can't backup games through linux, and the only software you can run is linux software. The BIOS is what let people pirate, but the only reason that needed to be cracked for Linux is because MS didn't allow it. If Sony allows linux then they'll leave the bios intact, the linux people get what they want and pirates aren't any closer to getting in.

I don't see why it wouldn't support linux... the PS2 did why not the PS3?

As for the rest of the stuff in TFA it sounds well and good, I wish the 360 had some of those features (which is probably why they're adding them to the PS3) but none of it means squat without the games. The games are why I love my Dreamcast, My Xbox 1, and My Xbox 360. With the dev kits coming out so late in the game, and the PS3 being the proverbial beast to program for, not to mention the generic trash that typically ends up on that system I suspect some pretty megar offerings at launch. It doesn't matter if they were giving the console away I wont get one until it has the games I want to play.

i dont care about any of the other info, it means nothing to me and isnt really that impressive IMO.  all i want to know about is the HD.  is it coming with the system or not?  is it mandatory for developers to use it or not?

IMO, the HD was one of the many things that the xbox had over the ps2, a standarized HD in every system.  it looks like there is a chance that the tables could turn this coming generation, unless MS drops the core package entirely and just sells premium consoles like some of us think they may do.

I pretty much guarantee MS stops producing the Core when PS3 comes out, it was only used to get as many consoles out there as possible.

As soon as stores start taking pre-orders, I'm going around all the stores near me and get around 6-8 pre-orders going. Then when it comes out I'm scalping it on eBay.

Look for me there! muhaha.gif

I'm with you bro.

I'm glad to hear that price is not important to some of you, but for the rest of us it is. I (like normal people) have kids to feed and bills to pay. There is no way I would be able to buy a PS3 at or around $600.
Yes there are the few that will buy it at any price, but the majority of us will financially have to pass.
Hopefully PS3 games will be around $60 so MS can drop the 360 games to $50 ("We have the same games at $10 cheaper!")

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this as well. I just paid 65 euros for GRAW -  that's staggering $76 for a video game. And at this point I can't see the prices going down, hopefully the competition will help the situation.

All in all, I'm glad to see Sony's getting somewhere with PS3 and has some ambitious plans for it. Competition is very good for the whole industry, I'd hate to see either company get the upper hand in the fight. They'd just get lazy after that. Frankly, If MS wouldn't have introduced x360, Sony would've happily sold PS2 for two more years.

They're fighting over our money, which always means better products, cheaper prices and sexier ads biggrin.gif
