PS3 WorldWide Launch in November, 60GB HD and more...-- Posted by XanTium on March 15 04:06 EST

Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi finally gave some official details about the PS3 at the PlayStation Business Briefing 2006 in Japan.
He confirmed that the PlayStation3 is delayed because the copy protection isn't ready with Blu-ray, but we'll get a worldwide launch in North America, Asia and Europe early (atleast for Japan within first 10 days of) November 2006.
They will produce the PS3 at a rate of 1 million units per month and should have 6 million units released by the end of march 2007.
The final PS3 development kits will be shipping to developers in June 2006.
To prevent piracy all PS3 games will come out on Blu-Ray discs only, not on CD/DVD. The console will of course be able to read PS1 CDs, PS2 DVDs and DVD movies.
Sony also announced that the PlayStation 3 will be 100% backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, and all titles played on the system will be displayed at high-definition resolutions.
The PS3 will require a, completely upgradeable, hard drive. Publishers have been told to develop titles with the assumption that the console will have a HD. Kutaragi also said the 60GB HD will support Linux OS and will act as a home server where users can store their media on.
The PS3 will include a built-in Wi-Fi connection that can serve as a wireless access point for the PSP.
Sony also unveiled some details of their online plans ('PlayStation Network Platform'). At launch the console will get community tools (lobby matching and voice chat) and commerce features (like in-game shopping and game downloads to the hard drive). The "basic" service will be free of charge.
No new software announcements or pricing details were made, maybe something for the GDC next week?

this may mean some good news to some, and bad news to others but for me it will give me the oportunity to compare the system and to see what it really has to offer. I dont want to be seen as a fan but i would really like to see the online system that it has and the content it will bring...

He is full of poop about the blu-ray copy protection being the reason for the ps3 delay.  It was supposed to be out in April, and the final dev kits will not be out until June.  The final dev kits do not have to have the blu-ray drive, that is irrelevant to game programming......Hmmm.....I smell sony BS again.

sounds nice.

but what about the price for all that?
the cheapest blue-ray-standalone-player i heard of is 600 bucks.
so, you have a blue-ray-player, a HD-console(3, if you want), built-in wifi and a 60gb hdd.
the price could be very high, don't you think?

i'll probably have a lot of tea until they get that out.
and i will have a lot fun using my new 360 one year sooner!!!

loving the box,

The production costs for the PS3 must be around $1000. Hopefully it won't be that expensive. The max I want to give for the PS3 is around $500-600

You're absolutely right.  A more accurate comment is, "Blue Ray isn't finalized yet, so since we didn't have our crap together, it is a good excuse."

One thing that concerns me is didn't they announce a world wide launch for nov for the PSP and it got pushed back?

Kutaragi also said the HD will support Linux OS

this smells bullshit.

1 . i dont think sony will let an open door to modding. people would buy the ps3 as a super computer to install linux and mythtv for instance... how does sony make money?

2. if they do that, then they'll have to release detailed info about the hardware of the ps3 or there will never be any patch in the linux kernel...

i doubt the hd will be a 60GB or price will sky-rocket.

Yeah well, that wasn't his point.  He was saying that they don't need to have the final Bluray drive because you don't need one to develop a game.  Why aren't they just getting the devs a kit with final hardware as fast as possible.  There must be other reasons, not just the Bluray, right?

Whether this is true or not, it just serves to remind me how damn slow MS are being with the backwards compatibilty updates..  I wish they'd hurry the hell up and get some more damn games working.

The games have to be emulated and therefore need specific emulators. Still, I see your point.
