Possible Ps3 Materials Cost

QUOTE
The company's shares fell as much as 4.4 percent on Monday after Merrill Lynch said in a research note last week that the PS3's launch might be delayed by six to 12 months and the cost of materials could initially approach $900 per unit.

Now I know that Merill Lynch isn't exactly an expert in the field of games, but there is the first real cost estimate that I've seen for the PS3.  How much would you have to sell it for to make it WORTH selling?  It will obviously be sold below cost, but what the cost will be and just HOW much below cost remains to be seen.

Since that post the $900 was corrected to $800.  This number really isn't that much bigger then the goofy $715 that was rumoured for the cost of making an xbox 360.

Sounds to me like everyone just wants to give the ps3 some negative publicity right now and hope they are right.  Seems like we won't get any Real information until E3.

agreed......i recant half of my statement also about the blu-ray drive cost....catty is right as far as the retail pricing but if they sell just the drive at retail that high i cant see $ony cutting the competition with a console included......guess i gotta go back to the history books and see how things were in the gaming industry when dvd-rom's came about

Yup, you are right there.
This might help a little.Budget DVD player prices in 2000.  I think PS2 came out in 2001, right?
Now keep in mind that they are "Budget" and the PS2 debuted for, what, $299?  There is one for $179 on that list, but that is "Budget" and the one is about $299.  So it costs about the same as a PS2 cost.  I know some people bought PS2s because they could play games AND DVDs, pretty cool back then.
So, IDK, this is going to be a tough thing to pull off for Sony.
