Hey all - Been outta the scene for awhile, but still enjoying my works..  

Long story short - I came across like 5 HDD's from dead systems (systems are gone, trashed).  All HDD"s are locked..  Can i pop them in my chipped box, boot off the dvddrive and unlock em, or do they have to be matching with the original chip on the mobo.. That's how I remember it, that you had to desolder the chip on the mobo.. But I'm hoping/wondering if that has changed, or if I'm basically sitting on 5 drives worth of garbage that should be thrown away...

as far as i know, all chips allow you to place any hdd into a box and load it up.

i'm still a bit of a "noob" but i think that to unlock it a hdd you have to use the info off the eeprom on the mainboard it was paired to..you might be able to put it in and use it with a chip, but i'm not sure if it would unlock it...but by all means, please try! it would be very helpful if that worked. let us know if it works or not.

It did NOT work

Xbox boots, displays the "xecutor config live loading", but then the power leds start flashing red and green.

I'm going to chalk this up to the eeprom as well, because that's what I thought - But when the first reply came in on this, and really, I'd been outta the scene for a long time (with my box happily in daily use), I thought I'd ask.  Just stinks having all these drives that in no way can ever be used again (in an xbox OR PC) because their system were trashed.  I'll continue to monitor this thread in case someone else has an idea or suggestion, but..  I think their all paperweights at this point

just a silly question but did you ever try popping them into a dos environment and using atapwd?? i know that if they were locked with xboxhdm they have a master password of XBOXSCENE, if locked with ConfigMagic the master password is set to TEAMASSEMBLY. if you're going to attempt this, this is the strategy i suggest:

1. make a quick linux iso from the "make-win-iso" option in xboxHDM folder.
2. boot to the main menu on the disk and then plug one of the locked drives in.
3. choose option 4 to boot to dos.
4. once in dos run command atapwd. it should open the program up.
5. once in the program make sure it's reading your locked drive and that it is indeed locked.
6. confirmed good read and locked status, good to go.
7. inside atapwd's menus just unlock with master password. i think i read somewhere that you need to enable operations first but i'll be honest i have no idea. also i've read that you need to unlock it twice, again not sure.

edit: just realized you never said anything about whether these were stock drives but if they were you might consider going over to llamas to maybe try the firmware method of unlocking them? or even try typing Seagate followed by 25 spaces(yes hit the space bar 25 times!) for the master password, heard that sometimes works for the stock drives. cheers.

Hey ExitRooster,

i have actually thought about how to do this at one time but never came up with a way to do it.  you shouldn't trash those hdds yet because if you can get them wiped then they are worth some money sometimes ,even if it is just $8 a piece then that is still $40 for all 5 hdds (i have 3 i am selling, all from xboxes that i have modded, 2 that are selling for $40 each on eBay, and one that runs for about $90 believe it or not )

if you get a chance, list the model numbers for all 5.  i am just curious as to which one you picked up.

i will keep this post saved and let you know if i think of anything

Won't work - As I (should have) mentioned, these were froms stock systems that died, not modded boxes.

The first piece of good news I've seen all day..  Just happens two of the 5 are that exact model Seagate drive.  I'll attempt this over the weekend and see what happens.  I also see from scrollin down there was someone that listed a wdc pw.  Pretty sure I tried doing that before, but I'm game for another attempt.  Will follow up on that as well..  Tnx for the help fellas!  Wish me luck..
