Heavenly Sword packed with 10 GB of sound data

From joystiq.com:

Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword has some beautiful music -- anyone with the demo can testify to that. An interview with lead audio Tom Colvin has quantified the developer's focus on aural satisfaction: 10 GB of sound data is included in the game, according to Develop.

That sizable number includes approximately three and a half hours of music, sound effects and 4,500 lines of dialog. "There's an hour and a half's worth of cut scenes in eleven languages," said SCEE's Garry Taylor.

I dont think thats a waste of space. i dont know about you but every game that comes out doesnt have such a dedication to music.

I love the music. Its easy to name bungie for the dedication of halo in the music department and others in the 16bits era.

I also love the rumble feature in videogames. Have you played Ninja gaiden on xbox? You HAVE to pay attention to the rumble feature. It is the game that I play always with the rumble on. Beautiful!

I love team ninja  love.gif

What a krock of shit.  What does this mean???? Fanboys will be touting bluray is worth its cost because of this.

The only reason why they wasting so much space is because the PS3 is a MULTIREGION console.  Packing all those pointless languages is to save money.  No need to spend time coding and voicing different versions for all over the world.

Whether the 360 version will have same high quality audio, but will be specific to the region of the world it is released.

Just want to clear this up before people start saying the ps3 version will be superior when in fact it probably will be inferior.

It's just dialogues that are in 11 languages.
You should know, you can fit 11 languages, 4.500 lines each in just 1 Gb, because voice is easily compressed and is monophonic, the same goes for sound effects, since speech and sound effects are "runtime" they are small.
( Voices and SFX must be mono because the game engine have to positionate them in a 3D environment )
With some math you can go and find that... well, it's likely that the audio track is DTS HD-HR @ 6Mbit/s, this comes down to 9,5 Gb of music (music, not sound in general) for 3,5 hrs.
But maybe someone prefers midi or 128kbit/s mp3.

And, as a matter of fact, every PS3 game can use up to 50Gb disc space, we're not limited to 6,80 Gb so if a PS3 developer find a way to make something better using the extra space they should use it.
Various XBox360 fanboys here are talking about the XBox360 version (that will never come), well that (impossible) version would feature a highly compressed low level sound and audio due to DVD restrictions.
Get over it, you lost today.

who cares if they use 20GB worth the sound data. it is how you use effects and music that matters. also i bet 98% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a DD, DTS and D-THD track. so who cares, get over it. they won't be releasing pc games on bluray any time soon so for a while bluray will be a ps3 only format. however, pc games will still own 360 and ps3 games in a year or so. storage space has very little to do with quality. zomgz blurayz0rz!(#*0 yeah, using mpeg-2 is soooo cool, i almost forgot.

Ehh...I dunno.  I don't think there's any denying that the extra space can help games and that developers should take advantage of it.  It's just a matter of how much it helps and whether it's worth carrying Blu-Ray for.  Compressing the audio would definitely affect quality, but would it really make that much difference to the average player?  Is the high cost of Blu-Ray really worth the extra space?  Guess that depends on the gamer.

PS3 has Blu-Ray so why not use some of the space. Plenty available . It doesn't mean compressing the Audio or removing some of the gameplay features so it does no harm.

Typical of the uninformed shit that is thrown whenever PS3 is mentioned. Heavenly Sword to which you refer is a PS3 exclusive.

Let's see if it was the 360 that used a 50GB optical format would we be hearing how it is a waste of space from these same people. I highly doubt it.

There's nothing wrong with using the space if you've got it, that's what it's there for. if you're building a game for PS3 I would HOPE you use it's unique features.

though it does sound a bit exaggerated.

you know the original article talked about all the wonderful audio effects and how the music was created. Joystiq of course spun it and wrote a whole other article concentrating mostly on the 10GB figure mentioned only in passing on the original

and of course this is just flame fodder for the argumentative fanboy chumps.

What differences does it make... honestly?

so what if the game couldn't be done on the Xbox 360 or Wii or whatever... it doesn't automatically make it a better game nor does it make it a worse game....

as long as there are differences in console developers who make exclusive titles will make use of those differences when appropriate.

In the mean time you all took joystiq's fanboy bait... hook line and sinker.

go read the original article: http://www.developma...-Heavenly-Sword

it's worth reading, and FWIW they don't even discuss anything about that figure at all, it's an estimate, if that's before compression or anything.

Since when are the specs more important than the game.
