E3: Midway Confirms UT3 PC Mods Playable On PS3

During a press conference today, Midway announced that Unreal Tournament 3 will allow PC mods created for the game to be playable in the PS3 version, via the PlayStation Network.

Developer Epic Games' Mark Rein told Gamasutra that he thought the service, which represents the first large-scale user created console content of its kind, would "really yield a lot of interesting stuff. People are going to be able to do a lot with this."

Now this sounded really good until they mentioned "Through the PSN", meaning free mod on PC but Sony will charge you to use it on the PS3. Still, good idea though.

Just because it'll be distributed through PSN doesn't mean you have to pay for it, besides there maybe other ways of getting it onto your PS3. Maybe downloading it on your PC then transferring it over to PS3 through Memory Stick.

....but those updates will probably have to be signed, approved, blessed, etc. by Sony for them to work with the PS3 version of UT3. Which means they'll probably charge something for them.

If they do charge money then maybe it will be possible for the creator of the mod to be compensated. I don't see how Sony would be able to charge for it otherwise.

im not sure IF sony can charge even if they wanted to.. arent these mods open source anyways? i mean if anything they could charge for a 'pack' to make user mods playable which i doubt but as for the actual mods i think its illegal to charge em if the creator doesnt wish to

Sony could charge the author, the reason is the "hosting" price, anyway I see no way this should happen.
What I think we'll see is that maps will be checked (exploits, cheats and so on) then put online.
The author mantain every right on maps, he can always "delete" his map if he's willing to do so, so it's unlikely (even impossible) that maps will be charged.

Looks like I was right about being able to transfer the mods from PC to PS3 using a memory stick. They outline it here http://www.tgdaily.c.../view/32897/98/ in paragraph 7.
