European Playstation 3 not so backwards compatible

From theinquirer.net:

Cynamite has managed to get its hands on a European PAL PS3 prior to the official launch date, and has begun performing backwards compatibility testing.

The list of games tested are claimed by Cynamite to be the top-twelve PS2 software titles, and are listed as followed:
God of War, MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, MGS 3: Snake Eater, Shadow of the Colossus, Guitar Hero 2, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, Okami, GTA: Liberty City Stories, Eragon, Final Fantasy X-2, Ratchet & Clank 3, Lumines Plus

Its reported that only ONE of these twelve games operates properly - Eragon. All other titles refused to run, and referred the user to future software updates and the Sony Website to read the downward compatibility list.

It's possible that this console hasn't received the latest firmware patch destined for European consoles on release (it was reported to be running 1.50), but if it is the case that the PS3 backwards compatibility will be performing as badly as this, then European gamers will be in uproar.

hahahaha laugh.gif

That would be funny if BC didn't really improve much with the new firmware, however the euro consoles probably weren't really designed to work without whatever update is coming in march.

....were they able to get Eragon to run in 720p or 1080i natively? uhh.gif  I still don't know if the 720p/1080i titles are the ones you already own emulated or ones you have to pay for again ( dry.gif ) from the playstation store.

I doubt this is true, how could it be? That would just be PR suicide.

Keep in mind that the euro PS3 probably isn't intended to run BC without the "march update".  We'll see what happens.

From the link posted by zequal:
QUOTE
Phil did confirm that the PAL/Euro version of the Playstation 3 currently has over 1200 compatible PS2 titles, with more to be added to the list by the time the console launches. This will be via a necessary firmware upgrade to 1.6 (the consoles were shipped over 4 weeks ago.)

Note that the pre-release PS3 tested in the posted news item was using 1.5 firmware.

considering that the PS2 and PS1 combined probably has about 4000 titles for both(japan and america), 1200 is a mere fraction.

The xbox 360 has 300+ titles BC and it has about 800 titles for it

Actually, that 1200 is for PS2 titles only... and it's a very good start no matter how look at it.

I am sure playstation 2 games are a little easier to emulate then xbox games but the is still much better than xbox 360 any way you look at it.

the ps2 has about 1400 titles in english alone, not including japanese titles that didn't make it over here.

I'm not saying its not alot of games, but someone posted earlier complaining about how it has so many compared to the 360 BC. And i was just pointing out how many games there are for the ps2 compared to the xbox1
