Kojima Doesn't Care About HD

From kotaku.com:

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima let out a few choice tidbits in a recent issue of GamePro magazine. His big, huge title MGS 4 is currently a PS3 exclusive and should stir up much interest in Sony's new console when it is eventually released. So, Hideo, what do you think about Blu-ray? Dish!

"You may hear Blu-ray is huge, gigantic, 20 GB or so, but that's not really that big to us. One basic [gameplay] with HD visual and 5.1 sound takes up so much space that the capacity will become too small in no time."
"We're not the ones who are saying we want HD. I'm not interested, myself, about HD at all. MGS games tend not to care about how clean the screen looks...we deliberately make the graphics look dirtier to give the atmosphere more life."

Obviously he is talking about high def if he is referring to 'clean graphics'.

My question is, why is this news? uhh.gif

Because PS fans are still desparetly trying to justify spending $600 on a console?
 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Let's translate:
"I'm not interested, myself, about HD at all"
"we deliberately make the graphics look dirtier"

So that it reads as what it really means:
"MGS won't look as good as GoW. We seriously screwed up and over-promised at e3 '05."

 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)
Quick Edit: And his comment would be fine, except the problems people are currently having with MGS screens are the bland textures and featureless environs- not the "dirtiness" level of the game. Although dirtying it up might cover up these problems...

I'd rather not play a game where the devs say they don't care about high definition (on a high definition console) as well as the fact that they want to put dirty looking graphics in.  Dirty = lazy = unfinished.  No thanks Hideo.  No wonder the recent screenshots look so crappy.

I disagree. I get what hideo was trying to say, he is looking at it from an artistic approach. An artist doesn't need perfect drawings with accurate painting to get the point across. Sometimes you gotta fuck it up to convey our fucked up emotions. Look at Shadow of colossus, it was definitely a "dirty" looking game but amazing looking at the same time. It got the point across.

Though I agree that MGS4 is graphically not up to par with some of these 360 games coming out , namely mass effect, GoW etc. I do believe the art direction is definitely a cut above all the next gen games we have seen so far and thats what can make the difference. MGS just looks really stylish, thats why the trailers garner so much attention.

Yeah.  I don't think Kojima meant 'dirty' graphics as in 'bad, sloppy graphics.'  I think he meant dirty as in to give the game an atmosphere.

I totally agree with him as well. I could care less about HD. A game doesn't have to be in HD to look good and he is proving that. His game has its own artistic style and even though i haven't agreed with all his decisions regrading most of his games i always enjoyed them. At the end of the day thats what makes the difference...will i remember this game and be able to play it again 10 years from now and still enjoy it? For Metal Gear, GoW, DMC, Ninja Gaiden, Streets of Rage, and some others my answer is yes.

Nobody has a problem with him saying 20 gig is not enough for a full HD experience?  Anyways... everything he says is too contradictory to be worth reading into.  Basically I see him saying... "don't ask me about graphics and HD, I make art".

The art direction?
Right up until "fat man" put on his rollerskates, maybe I could agree.
Right up I spotted Raiden's high heels and dress in his so-called "ninja" outfit, maybe I could agree.
Or Metal Gear (acid?)'s "Girl with massive red boobs", even then, maybe I could have agreed.
Summed together? Not so much.

There's incredible art (and script) direction in there, somewhere, but there's a vast brick of acid-smoking and weed-based "hey man, wouldn't it be weird if..." laying on top of it.

Today is a good day, rotfl, but my gut hurts from all the laughs I love the last line classic!!

I agree completely some pretty weird stuff is going on inside his head, but his games are great and I think that is the bottom line are the games fun.  HD is not the fun-maker but it doesn't hurt either  biggrin.gif.

You're right that a game doesn't have to be in HD and look nice, rather it looks nice in SD and looks absolutely stunning in HD. With the power of the PS3, this shouldn't be a problem to make the game look awesome while in 1080i/p.

High-definition, blu-ray was made for it, the PS3 was made for it, and all the video games should be made for it as well.
