PS3 Backwards Compatibility Issues

Sony may have included the PS2's CPU and GPU with every PlayStation 3 system, but the system still appears to be having some problems with backwards compatibility. Just in time for the PS3's second anniversary (the second day it's been on the market in Japan), Sony passed on the specifics.

Now accessible at the Japanese PlayStation.com site is a page for seeking out the backwards compatibility status of PS2 and PS1 titles. The Japanese page can be accessed here. By inputting the title, publisher name, release date or product number (an eight digit code containing four letters followed by a hyphen then four numbers), you can seek out the status of the 7,841 titles in Sony's database.

We did find a few problem titles by looking through the list. Here's a quick run down.
# Tekken 5: A number of modes don't play background music properly.
# Xenosaga Episode II: The opening movie sometimes stops and sometimes doesn't properly play background music.
# Code Age Commanders: Problems (including data loss) with save game data.
# Radiata Stories: Background music during movie scenes may not play back properly.
# Star Ocean Till the End of Time (includes Directors Cut): Movie scenes may not have proper sound playback.
# Driving Emotion Type-S: BGM may not properly play back during races
# Gran Turismo 4: The screen may freeze following the title demo.
# Hot Shots Golf 3/4: Some sort of problem with the controls becoming unresponsive
# Operator's Side: The game freezes at the logo screen when started up with the Seamic controller
# Onimusha Dawn of Dreams: Screen will occasionally appear 2cm to the right
# Hyper Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition: The screen will not appear correctly in some instances. The S.F.II Movie cannot play properly.
# Megaman X7: There are times when the background music won't play properly
# Devil May Cry: The screen will sometimes freeze during the title demo
# Onimusha: During movie playback, the sound will occasionally stop
# Suikoden III: Cannot read PS1 data during the game.
# Silent Hill 2: When going from the title screen to the demo screen, the screen may freeze

While these problems don't seem to be too bad, it does bring up an interesting question...

How does Sony go about fixing these problems? If the BC is offered through hardware is it even possible for them to be fixed through software updates?

I bet it some virtual machine doing the emulation and the "hard" bits are not emulated at all but handled via the real h/w.

If that's the case then an update might be in the works for the runtime of the emulation, obviously not the for H/W which is probably the same as in PS2 therefore perfect.

If you've seen any of the internal shots of the PS3 it is just a PS2 shoved inside of the PS3... it's got the same chip (EE+GS) as the Slim PS2.

Seeing as the PS2 didn't do much software wise itself I would imagine it works the same way the PS1 BC worked on the PS2. in that the console simply detected that it was a PS1 disc and passed all the commands to the PS1 hardware until reset... No real software involved there.

"Virtual machine" implies emulation... there isn't any emulation happening here just PS2 games running on PS2 hardware.

at first glance one might be inclined to say "at least MS got it right with emulation" but thats not the case. PS3 is  handling over 7000 games not some shitty 80 game backwards compatibility list like xbox 360.

I think ps2 has some backwards compatibility issues for the record. I wasn't as much in the scene when that came out to know if there were press releases on BC issues in ps2.

Here is what I read on The Magic Box.

ZDNet reported that over 200 Playstation 2 do not work properly on PlayStation 3, some of these games will not start or freezes, or have graphical or sound glitches. Sony expects the problem to be resolved with future firmware updates.

Damn, over 200 games is alot.

"Reports have now been confirmed that Final Fantasy XII is unplayable on the PS3 due to BC issues..."

"This just in.. Tokyo's Shinagawa ward is now in flames."

Well if its same as slim ps2 it will never have 100% backwards compatibility since the slim ps2 dont even have 100% compatibilty with ps2 games...
but its only really a hand full of games out the thousands available and im sure most people who have the ps2 games that dont work on ps3 will still have a ps2 anyways..
