New Resistance Info
« on: October 23, 2006, 03:14:00 PM »

New Resistance: Fall of Man information has come from Ted Price concerning the final product of the game.
...
> The final disk size is 16gb. This was accomplished by removing PAL movies and improved data compression.
>The final resolution is 720p. Developers said that it was originally at 1080p, but it was lowered to keep VRAM down.
>No video chat will be supported in Resistance. But it will in future PS3 games.
...

When they said no video chat, did they mean no video chat in-game? Or do they mean that video chat is not first party and is up to developers. So if i had only RFoM, then i couldn't video chat at all?

And yes everyone said that they could compress it more, and they were right. 25gb to 16gb is quite a difference.

edit: sorry i forgot the link. i got it from a ps3fanboy.com which got it from IGN
link is http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2006/10/23/a-ton-...he-man-himself/

It makes Blu-ray look to large, DVD too small, but HD-DVD juuuust right.

I wonder how much further they could compress it. And how well this game is compress compared to Xbox 360 games on scale.

He says some really interresting stuff on that blog

first they compressed it ~4-5gb for burning purposes?

Next he says the ps3 will not do any upconverting, that is left entirely up to the tv.

And as for 1080p, read the ms engineer news on xbox-scene, bu they basicly say that on the bigger levels they would have needed more ram to keep the textures if they wanted 1080p with the same fluff fluff.

I also got the impression the ingame movies won't be hd but rather just ntsc sd and ntsc converted (on the fly to pal).

Online play will be free. Sony is running the servers

Players will only be able to enter games in game on unranked matches.

Some worrying responses and some satisfying If I'd say so

And this is a shock to some how? Like every game within the past 2-3 years has ranked matches only allow people to join before the game starts. I don't see how anyone would think otherwise unless the PS2 online did that.

i agree with deftech.  if it's so amazing and important and good to have a game that takes up 25 gb, then why would they take it down then brag about it?  I just don't get it anymore

SL HD is 15GB and SL BR is 25GB.  DL disc, regardless of standard, are more expensive to manufacture.

Who knows?   To appease all the people who said it was large because they were lazy or couldn't compress it any better?

Damned if they do and damned if they don't

I realize there was 1gb difference, but theres so much wasted space on the Blu-ray disc.

That's one of the benefits of the greater capcity of Blu-Ray and even HD DVD, i.e. economies of scale.  All the disc can be made on the same line in the same factory no need for multiple pressings for various regions.

Guess not, my bad.  My point was that hopefully we can expect lower prices with the more disc that get manufactured.

Not really...

Basically they said in so many words "We need 25GB because our game requires that much space"

Gamers responded with "That's ridiculous, we don't believe you, and if it's true it's either CG or sloppy programing"

They could have just left it at that... stuck with their original announcement and said "nope you're wrong we really do need all that space, wait for our amazing game and you'll see why"

but instead they compressed it basically saying to the gamers "yup you were right, we suck"

Of course they could have avoided all of this by simply not lying about "needing" all that space in the first place.... really there was no reason WHAT-SO-EVER for them to even bring up the space issue except to lead people to believe that their game would not have been possible without Blu-Ray.

And if you consider THAT, what do developers care if people are all warm and fuzzy about having a Blu-Ray drive... THEY DONT... it's Sony who wants/need to convince people of that to sell the console.

So now the question is Why would a developer announce that their game takes up more space then it actually does claiming that it wouldn't have been possible without a feature of the console that a whole lot of people have dubbed UNNECESSARY.

-They could have not brought up the space requirement issue at all... they wouldn't have been damned
-They could have brought up the space issue but provided realistic figures instead of making the wild claims that they did... they wouldn't have been damned
-They could have just stuck to their innitial claims and simply told people to wait for the game... they would have been damned to a lesser extent but they wouldn't have looked like liars.

Sony uses "creative PR",
People in Sonys pocket are forced to get in line... and use "creative PR".

its also known as lying... but hell.. who cares if sony sell a few BR drives based on it.
