Oblivion: The PS3 Interview
October 11, 2006 -

IGN: How different will this version be from the others? If I've played this before, is there a reason to play it again on the PS3?

Todd Howard: Our goal is always to make the game look and feel consistent across all platforms. We design the game we want to make and then make that game available on as many platforms as possible. So, it's the same base game as was released on PC/ 360. The PS3 is benefiting from us continuing to develop our core technology that drives all our Elder Scrolls games. Some of that is noticeable on the screen -- like all the new graphic shaders -- and some isn't. The best examples are those new shaders we have for how "near detail" and "far detail" blend together on the landscape. You no longer have a harsh line cutting across the two levels, they blend together seamlessly and the distant detail and land looks much nicer.

IGN: Are all of the add-ons going to ship with it or will they still be extra?

Howard: The downloadable content is actually designed to work with a game that is in-progress and doesn't work as well with a new game. So instead we focused on Knights of the Nine as the new stuff to add to Oblivion that would work well no matter where you are in the game. Downloadable content is something we'd like to support on PS3, but right now that's really in Sony's hands.

IGN: How will the PS3's tilt functionality be utilized in the PS3 version?

Howard: We aren't supporting tilt.

IGN: Will there be a special edition like the X360 and PC versions had?

Howard: No, standard edition only.

IGN: Are you able to use the hard drive on the PS3 to make the world stream better?

Howard: We use it pretty much the same way we use the 360 hard-drive.

IGN: Will the Knights of the Nine quests eventually become available for X360 and PC players of Oblivion, or are they exclusively PS3's?

Howard: We always aim to have all our content available across all platforms, so that is our goal.

IGN: Has Sony been able to provide you with enough information so that downloadable content for Oblivion will be available for the PS3 version somewhere down the line?

Howard: How Sony will handle this is still a little fuzzy to us, but it is our intention to make that content available for PS3 as soon as we're able.

interesting interview IMHO.  i bolded the comments that caught my eye.  ps3 fanboys were claiming that devs would use the HDD to better extent since every ps3 has a HDD, but the rest of us knew that there would be no lack of support in the 360's HDD.

ps3 fanboys will be pointing at games like oblivion and FNR3 stating that it looks better because of all the ps3's added "power".  when in reality it should look better because of all the extra development time.  when a dev says that the ps3 is benefiting from us continueing our development, this has nothing to do with power but time itself.

i know that some in this forum were thinking that the Nights of the Nine quest for the ps3 was an exclusive for good, however of course that is not the case.

and last but not least, this is yet another developer (VERY close to launch) which expresses sony's confusion and lack of preparation when it comes to their online plan.

so those that are waiting to get this for the ps3, your waiting over 6 months for improved shaders  huh.gif  yeah i can see how that $600 console is showing it's worth already   laugh.gif

oh yes, interesting inverview indeed.    happy.gif

good to know they're bringing the Knights of the Nine to all the platforms...

VERY interesting about the "Downloadable content is something we'd like to support on PS3, but right now that's really in Sony's hands."

in other words: yes we'd love to offer DLC but Sony hasn't given us any tools to do so.

Does xfire do any kind of content downloads? If they do then they probably could do that.
Does the x360 support DLC for oblivion?

Yup just checked the xbox pipeline, too bad they charge for everything though, and that you'll have to pay more for the console downloads then the pc ones. And this will only work for the lucky ones with hdd's I guess.
hmm just found one strange thing some quests for the pc requeres the new patch but they are still able to run on the 360 as is.

Wonder if they could do expansions on the x360 or ps3 that would be cool very cool.

from what i remember most of the downloads are the same across the 360 and pc with only a few being more expensive on the 360.

"Are you able to use the hard drive on the PS3 to make the world stream better?"

what a stupid question! as if the ps3 is the ONLY platform to use a hard drive rolleyes.gif

I mean both the PC and 360 versions use the HDD to stream the world so why is the ps3 HDD gonna "make it stream better"?

oh well, thats IGN for you.

360 games are supposed to be designed to not require the harddrive.

I thought the streaming on the Xbox 360 version also had something to do with the cache for the 360

If this is true than loading screens will take even longer than they did on the 360 because the PS3 has half the cache than the 360. That added with a higher resolution.

but the hard drive on oblivion makes it faster to load. and some games do require hard drives

i believe this question may have refered to past beliefs that developers would utilize the ps3's HDD more/better then that in the 360 because every ps3 console has one.   if you remember correctly many were worried that the 360's HDD would not be used correctly or to the extent if it was standard even though devs knew that 90%+ had HDD.

while this is true, M_heal has specifically shown the code to program your game to check if a HDD is there or not.  developers can/do program games to work without a HDD but they also develop the game to take advantage of it.

the cache that you are speaking of is not the cache in the console (like in the CPU) but in the HDD itself.  data is loaded into the cache on the HDD and streamed from there which is faster then loading directly off of the DVD.

only two games to date require the HDD, FFXI and that football manager game.  no other game requires it although your correct that it does improve the load times and performance across all games.  you are also true that the load times on the ps3 version should be longer, not because of the cache difference, but because of the slower disk drive in the ps3 vs the 360's.

im surprised that the interviewer did not question about load times, that is something some people may ask.
