Personally I'm sick and tired of all the double speak, and CGI passed off as game footage. Buying a console is an investment if I'm going to drop some serious cash I want to make sure I'm getting the most out of that money. When someone pitches me double speak or outright lies, or shows me faked images about what the console is capable of it really makes me wonder if they have something to hide... Shouldn't the console be able to sell itself on it's own merits without being hyped up with false impressions? Some of that is to be expected at the very early stages before there is any hardware sure get me excited about what you PLAN to deliver, show me videos of what your target graphics will look like. But don't tell me those things are something their not, and once you DO have hardware... show me some real games... and give me some real specs. Without that your product becomes vaporware, a myth, and the more you try to boost it's impression without tangable substance the more I'm going to call shenanigans.
This has been Sony's track record thus far, and it's really soured me on the whole PS3, typically I enter new generations with an open mind as to what to expect, a new console is chance for a new beginning with any company and form my opinions after I get to use a console extensively. But all of the crap from the Sony camp has soured me on the PS3 before it's even gotten out of the gate...
HOWEVER...
This morning I came across a few thing that really impressed me... not just on their own merits but because they were genuine in their delivery; two games to be exact.
White Knight Story (
Windows Media Quicktime) from Level 5... check out that demo... Basically they came straight "here is our game, what do you think?" It's obviously real game footage (and it looks great), it shows how the game is played (which I think is really cool) and there's no BS... it's just the game plain and simple... and it really improved my impression of the PS3...
No hype, no BS, no false promises, no competitor bashing, just a pure and simple gameplay demo... THAT IS WHAT GAMERS WANT TO SEE.
The other game is
fl0w... it's an arcade style game that promises the same cult following that Geometry Wars brought to the Xbox 360... The game was developed by students based on the "
flow theory" but what is really interesting is that you can play it right now:

Both of these are no thanks to the Sony PR machine but it's nice to see that the 3rd parties are stepping up to show that there really is some substance behind all of the smoke and mirrors.
