How To Properly Sell A Ps3
« on: September 25, 2006, 08:19:00 AM »

Personally I'm sick and tired of all the double speak, and CGI passed off as game footage. Buying a console is an investment if I'm going to drop some serious cash I want to make sure I'm getting the most out of that money. When someone pitches me double speak or outright lies, or shows me faked images about what the console is capable of it really makes me wonder if they have something to hide... Shouldn't the console be able to sell itself on it's own merits without being hyped up with false impressions? Some of that is to be expected at the very early stages before there is any hardware sure get me excited about what you PLAN to deliver, show me videos of what your target graphics will look like. But don't tell me those things are something their not, and once you DO have hardware... show me some real games... and give me some real specs. Without that your product becomes vaporware, a myth, and the more you try to boost it's impression without tangable substance the more I'm going to call shenanigans.

This has been Sony's track record thus far, and it's really soured me on the whole PS3, typically I enter new generations with an open mind as to what to expect, a new console is chance for a new beginning with any company and form my opinions after I get to use a console extensively. But all of the crap from the Sony camp has soured me on the PS3 before it's even gotten out of the gate...

HOWEVER...

This morning I came across a few thing that really impressed me... not just on their own merits but because they were genuine in their delivery; two games to be exact.

White Knight Story (Windows Media Quicktime) from Level 5... check out that demo...  Basically they came straight "here is our game, what do you think?" It's obviously real game footage (and it looks great), it shows how the game is played (which I think is really cool) and there's no BS... it's just the game plain and simple... and it really improved my impression of the PS3...

No hype, no BS, no false promises, no competitor bashing, just a pure and simple gameplay demo... THAT IS WHAT GAMERS WANT TO SEE.

The other game is fl0w... it's an arcade style game that promises the same cult following that Geometry Wars brought to the Xbox 360... The game was developed by students based on the "flow theory" but what is really interesting is that you can play it right now: http://www.filecloud...hp?file_id=3034
Again, no hype no BS, just a game demo so I can form my own opinions.

Both of these are no thanks to the Sony PR machine  but it's nice to see that the 3rd parties are stepping up to show that there really is some substance behind all of the smoke and mirrors.  pop.gif

Ever since E3 actually, they've been doing plenty of gameplay stuff.  Look at this interview btw

and on their resistance page, there's plenty of gameplay videos from and since TGS06 down there to satisfy anybody.  This game is shaping up to be one of the most impressive FPS's I've seen next to FEAR, COD2 and HL2.

here are some other gameplay trailers shown before and after TGS.

DMC4 TGS06

A lot of those arn't actual gameplay though, and all of them came with a heaping helping of hype and other crap.

As for Resistance shaping up to be a good FPS... I wont hold my breath... both FEAR and PDZ Looked like they'd be awesome console FPSs but both were horrible once I actually got to play them.

I usually just wait till the dam console is released before I believe anything, there's so much lying shit on the Internet you can never believe everything. Well I think the PS3 will do well when it's out, I just think Sony has shot them self in the foot so many times they will end up with no legs. So to me I think Sony has got a bad rep now with all there PR lying, but once the console is out, it should be pretty good.

I'm on the Resistance Band Wagon, But Jason Rubin has a bit too much of the Sony PR 'my shit smells better' attitude.  I'm not very patient but I'm going to try to hold out on this thing for a 2 years or so until the library catches up with a few more A+ titles.

Aside from that.. very nice read (again).  White Knight Story is definetly a breathe of fresh air, and far more interesting than 60fps Ridge Racer.  For me, it was probably the only interesting game video that came out of TGS, the MGS video was ok... but i certainly didn't watch it twice.

are you out of your mind? like, did you actually say that w/o watching those videos? Shame on you.  ALL of them are GAMEPLAY, hence me labelling them, GAMEPLAY.  I wasnt about to give you a whole bunch of videos on trailers, when you said that PS3 media has been full of "smoke and mirrors"  You even said that they showed lack of gameplay which was false, because I just gave you a pretty big list (in which isnt the entire thing) that came from TGS alone.

There were also other gameplay trailers from GC 2006 and E3 2k6 that I didn't post, but those aren't the topic, TGS demoes were.

edit: I went through the videos again and the only non-gameplay was GTHD and Motorstorm.  GTHD at least was a replay of gameplay.

Yeah its all ingame stuff. If you watched some of the other TGS videos such as the interviews with some of the directors or producers of games they did demonstrations and just about all the stuff if not all of it was playable, right there and then on the show floor.
