have looked through the forum and through the pinned topics but i seem to have run into a rather strange hardware issue with a second hand xbox.

it seemed to work fine till i did a reset.

upon resetting the xbox i get the solid green light but no video no audio but i can hear the dvd do its spin up.

then from 'off' tried to boot using the eject button this time the eject ring is flashing green, no other colours and still no video no sound.

so i decided to open it up to check various possibilities suggest by this site and others. connected it up and it worked! till i reset/powered off.

then i found that if i unplug the power cord from the back and leave it alone for a couple of minutes then plug back it in and  reboot via eject or power button it boots to dash again.

it seems something's iffy with the power supply (i think) if anyone knows of a quick fix (or specific cause of this problem) without having to replace the power supply would they please give us a heads up.

note: i've checked ide cable, hdd, dvd, dvd power cable and these are okay.

hmmm... seems i can't edit my post a 2nd time round but i found the source of my woes a bad power/eject switch assembly!!!

arrrgh thought i had it licked but its back!!!

it acts like a 'coma console' but since it does boot into dash every so often i don't think it's a corrupted bios on this v1.3 xbox but some other problem.

anyone have a clue??

Probably a coma console. They will still boot sometimes.

thanx for the assist but it seems to be fixed. but as a heads up this is a stock bios. i picked the xbox from eb-games shoulda clued in that it was in a sorry state to start off with when i saw what seemed to be the dried remnants of a coffee/shake around the jewel and down the sides where someone made a feeble attempt to clean up.

after taking a closer look at the m/b there was thin layer of dust/gunk that wouldn't come off using air in a can, so i took out the board hung it up and sprayed a thin layer of contact cleaner on both sides. i noticed the run off was pretty black.

once it was dry i slammed everything back together and on fired it up with no probs, hit reset booted fine. powered off then booted using eject and that fine was too.

powered everything off. came back a couple of hours later powered on did another reset test and everything is going fine. it looks stable enough to load a softmod.

*sigh* loaded softmod, install went fine went to reboot to refresh my custom ini for evox and yep nada happened.

movax was right it is a coma console!

i hate doing it but i'll bite the bullet and install a modchip. don't get me wrong i love modchips for making it easy to expand the xbox's capabilities and in this case recover a doorstop it's just that i plain HATE soldering. the smell really gets to me.

Just enable the TSOP write points and reflash it with a stock bios (if you want to stick with your softmod) or hacked (like an X2 bios). Reflashing will fix it though the problem may or may not resurface later.

If you immediately run into problems after that, something else is going on.

that would be if i didn't have a modchip, right? or would it be in addition to.

'coz right now with the modchip in there it hasn't conked out yet. so far so good 2 days and counting.
