Dual Hard Drive Setup
« on: December 13, 2007, 05:54:00 PM »

I have a 1.6 XBOX that I am trying to set up with a DUAL DRIVE setup.

The way the IDE Cable is set up is this:

1.6MB<===>DVD Drive<==>EVOX HD<==>STOCK HD

I have a switch set up so that, on one position, the EVOX HD (120g) is powered up and it boots up as a SOFT MOD'ed EVOX xbox.

With the switch in the other position, the box (ostensibly) boots up as a STOCK XBOX.

Problem is I can't get the box to boot up properly.  I am thinking it's a JUMPER issue, but I have tried every possible combination..

I can get it to boot up as one or the other by changing the jumpers, but I can't seem to set the jumpers so that one or the other will boot up, solely based on the POWER SWITCH position.

Any ideas??

Thanx

So.... Both HDDs are always connected to the IDE cable, regardless of whether they're powered or not?

Bad, BAD idea. Never connect a live IDE cable to an otherwise unpowered HDD.

For starters, drives don't become "invisible" just because they aren't getting juice from the molex. IDE cables supply power too. Not enough to run a drive normally, of course, but enough that you could corrupt the drive contents.

(Though locked drives probably have some protection...)

Yea, that's what I kind of figured.  With a computer, you can't usually power up a system if the IDE cable is connected  but the power is not.  I just thought that, with an XBOX, it was different.

So, given the above parameters, how would you go about acheiving what I want to do??  IE, using a flip switch in the back to boot up with a SoftMod'ed HD or a STOCK HD??

Thanx  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

There is information somewhere on how to do this - you sometimes have to include one of the IDE ribbon cable wires in your switch, and with some drives it just won't work. You'll just have to search for it, cause I'm not up to it right now.

Hmmmmm

Doing some research, the only information I can find on Dual Hard Drives doesn't say anything about modifying the IDE cable..

This one in particular

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Mods/xbox_4_con...cable_udma_.htm

explains how to do it, but the only difference I can see between that setup and mine is that an ATA/66 IDE cable is used...

Could that be my problem??

Thanx

I don't know if this information is accurate:

Maybe xman knows, he's still active on here.

Thanx for that link.  I have just got ahold of a couple new drives so I will try that link with different combinations and see what I come up with.

Thanx again...
