Harrison: There's No Place Like Home

From next-gen.biz:
Quote

In a two-part interview Next-Gen talks with Sony's Phil Harrison about the company's extraordinary PlayStation Home and PS3's new place in the world. Colin Campbell reports...

Harrison says, "When you introduce something that resonates with people, they immediately want to know more, to go deeper. They ask, ‘can I do this with it, can I do that with it'. These kind of detailed implementational questions seem to come from a personal motivation point of view. They want to know what they can do with it. I found that to be encouraging."

The interest is understandable. PlayStation Home is one of the most significant developments in our industry's history. It represents a bridge between gaming as an art-form and the people who have yet to accept gaming into their lives. It is more than just a 3D lobby for gamers to meet and gossip and show-off and compete. It is a portal to a new world for anyone who watches movies at home; a sizable community.

Xbox Achievements is for the top-layer of gamers. Nintendo's Mii has reached further into the demographic soup. But PlayStation Home goes deepest, ladling fully into the populace. This product is not about games at all. It's not an extension of the games experience. It's an extension of experience itself. That makes it exciting and, potentially, dangerous. But more of that later. For the moment, the news is good.

Obviously he still thinks people are going to buy the PS3 for a Blu-Ray player instead of a gaming machine. Home is significant  cause it lets "people who have yet to accept gaming into their lives" to take part in a gaming world? LOL. Anyone who buys a gaming machine has accepted gaming into their lives. Why not bundle an easy gamer friendly game or two with the system with like the Wii so people can just pop in a disk and pick the game up quickly and have fun. Might be a bit easier then hooking a PS3 up to the internet, creating a network account, downloading a 500MB piece of software then being thrown into 3D where most people will be using a mic and keyboard to chat with each other. Gaming noobs are gonna be real cool pumping out 3 words a minute with their SIXAXIS controllers.

People who have yet to accept gaming into their lives wont be dishing out $600 for a PS3, they would go with something cheaper first like a wii, ps2, maybe a 360, something to get them started.

They would go with a DS or PSP. But, probably a DS.

It is easy to plop in Brain Age, turn her on, and play some Sudoku.

Everything else is too complicated for an average non-gamer.
