This is pretty weird.  Has anyone heard of this problem?  It started earlier this week, when I walked into my room after school and noticed that my Xbox was on.  I NEVER leave my systems on, and I haven't even touched my Xbox in a year!  So I just turned it off.  Two days later, the same thing happens again.  Finally today it turned on while I was in my room watching TV.  I went to turn it off, but no matter how long I held the power button in, it wouldn't turn off.  I went into the Executer softmod's menu, where the last choice is to power down the Xbox, and that's finally how I turned it off.  I called MicroSoft and told them my problem (leaving out the softmod part) and the guy told me that I needed a new power cord.  I told him that I already got a new one during their massive power cord replacement purge awhile back.  He assured me that it was just a power cord problem and that a free new one would fix this problem.  Well, I never say no to anything free, so I will be getting a new cord in about 2 weeks.  Oh yeah, he also told me to clean the Xbox and use a compressed aircan to clean the disc tray!?  Total nonsense, but I cleaned it anyway.  It was a bit dusty, but the vents and tray were already perfectly clean, so I doubt that was the source of my problems. Does anyone know if this customer service rep is right?  

Does anyone have more expertise, because I really have a hard time believing that a hardly played, in excellent condition Xbox, with an already new power cord, will be fixed by an even newer power cord.  Please help!!!

The guy wouldn't have a clue. How in hell can a replacement power cord stop your X-Box from turning itself on, and then not allowing you to turn it off. He must think power cords have some sophisticated microscopic circuitry inside it that's going to prevent any unwanted power ups.
Don't believe anything that's comes from Micro$oft.

Technically a bad cord in combination with a faulty motherboard could cause powerups (but not like this). Whenever a loose connection sparks you get a surge. In digital devices that can cause all sorts of strange behavior.

Thanks a lot for your help guys.  I guess my case is hopeless, because there is no way I have the technical expertise to open up my Xbox and fix it in the way that the aforementioned tutorial requires me to.  

The biggest shame here is that I treat my systems very well.  Heck, my old 8-bit NES is still in perfect working order!  Shame on Microsoft for treating their customers so poorly.  I'll keep you all posted on what changes if any the new power cord has.  Apparently they are forged from magical properties that can erase all traces of corrosion on my motherboard!? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

If anyone has any additional advice please do reply.  All your comments are appreciated.

oh yes, your xbox is dieing (not really) 5 years afterwards, how dare they do that. </sarcasm>

believe me in the scheme of things if this is the first thing wrong with your box, you got an awesome box. Give it the respect it deserves and poke around and fix her up.

Just had an Xbox with exactly this problem. Followed the tut above & it was bang on. Well done to whoever discovered & then documented this   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif)  - it would have taken me days of fault finding etc & I would have probably ended-up just junking the box, or getting a new mother board.

Okay everyone, I have good news, which you won't believe.  Heck, I can't even believe it.  My Xbox replacement cord came in the mail 2 weeks ago.  It has an adapter style interface on it's plug with what appears to be some circuit breaker light on it.  Green light means it's still operational, red light means it's time to get a new one from Microsoft.  I have seen several people get these style plugs during the massive recall a few years ago.  As stated previously I thought that this was a waste of time.  However, I have to say that I was very wrong.  

Ever since I used this new plug, I have never had another unwanted power-up!

So there you have it, it works!  I guess Microsoft isn't so dumb after all!  The day the new plug arrived, I played the heck out of my system for the first time in years.  Since then I haven't had one single phantom power-up.  So, if anyone has this problem and you don't have the technical know-how to open up your Xbox, realize that this is a good option.  Just wanted to give everyone an update.  Take care and Happy Holidays!

I doubt anyone is still reading the original Xbox forums but here goes:

I had an old 1.1 Xbox that I softmoded and installed a 750 GB HD.  Naturally, I was a little concerned when my box refused to turn off, would turn on automatically when the power cord was plugged in and would only turn on with the eject button.  I was all set to install this mod and had the Xbox disassembled (confirming the corrupted traces) when I remembered I had been sent a replacement cable for an Xbox that I had in 2001 (and which I no longer have).  Strangely, I still had the cable and stranger still, I was able to find it.  I reassembled the Xbox and plugged in the replacement cord (the one with the brick at the end).  Voila!  No more problem.  Did a little stress testing and no power offs either.  The problem is completely solved.

Makes you wonder.  Was the defective cable story really a cover up for an internal manufacturing defect?  If consumers had known that the problem was with defective traces on the motherboard, they'd want to have MS replace the whole console which would have cost MS a great deal more money that just a cable replacement.  MS even sent a sticker along with the cable to place on the Xbox that stated the box would only work with the new cable.  I wonder if anyone has taken the power cord brick apart to see what it really does.

My sentiments exactly Antiluddite.  This goes way deeper than most people realize.   Sadly, this also means that M$ is 0 for 2 in the console design department.
