Looking For A Way To Determine Mod Chip Type

My friend had his wii modded awhile ago and he does not know which type of chip was put in and he can not get in contact with the guy who did it. I really need to update the modchip though so I was wondering if there is anyway I can determine what kind of mod chip is in the wii without opening it.
