Wiikey Driving Me Crazy
« on: November 27, 2007, 08:46:00 AM »

Hello

Have not been able to get my installation of wiikey to work, took a lot of pictures yesterday in hope that someone can help me...

(IMG:http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee14/sebastianand/forum_wii.jpg)

More pictures in very high resolution

As you can see, is it one of those d2b iccircuits with 3 chopped legs and the 5 leg from the left is missing a trace on the pcb, se picture below:

(IMG:http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee14/sebastianand/notrace.jpg)

Have reinstalled it many times now. Original works like a charm but backups don't not even the wiikey config disc. It only says "unable to read disk". Have tried a lot of dvd brands and different burners. Even backups witch works in other wii's who has been modified. Have also tried 2 different wiikeys. Is this fixable or should i just sell it and forget about it.... it's not a d2c chip in it...

Thanks in advance

 Sebastian

Your three wires to the D2Bchip are definitely not connected properly.  You can easily see the rightmost one is connected to an adjacent pin.

Its a messy install and could be the install itself, but one problem I know that I had before is dead wiikeys... for some reason they were not programmed at the factory and i spent countless hours trying to install them before realizing that of a batch of 20, 15 were dead!  ohmy.gif Luckily someone has dumped the wiikey firmware so you program them with an extremely simple to build programmer, and a parallel port.

Your install may be the problem, but if you are sure that it is not, give this a try to program the wiikey, its worked for me on all 15 of my "bad" wiikeys.

Checkout this thread

http://psx-scene.com...ega8-chips.html

The very first post has an autoprogrammer so all you need to do is
1. Build SP12 programmer
2. run install_giveio.bat (to install parallel port drivers)
3. run program.bat (to program your chip)

Now for the programmmer...

I have taken pictures from

http://www.openwii.o..._the_Programmer

and the "WiiKey 1.9g AutoProgrammer" package that can be downloaded at

http://psx-scene.com...ega8-chips.html

and merged them into an easy to read, self-explanatory schematic for programming the wiikey

IPB Image

*NOTES*
1. The turqoise and brown colored points are not used for programming
2. The blue point has two access points, you can solder to either one, but much easier on the provided pad then the IC leg... actually if u burn off a pad, you can follow the traces and connect the corresponding wire to any of the corresponding IC legs... I had to do this a couple times because I burnt off pads on some of my wiikeys.

Just follow the colorcoding when u build the programmer and connect the wires from the programmer to the specified points on the wiikey and reprogram the wiikey complete with 1.9g firmware.

And YES this diagram can be used to make your very on DIY wiikey. The chip used is an Atmega8L and digikey part number is ATMEGA8L-8PU-ND (if you do make your own wiikey, it is recommended to also add a Capacitor (0.10µF, 50V, ±20%)  between VCC and ground points on the Atmega8L... you can see this is done on the wiikey as well, however I am not sure what the other capacitor on the wiikey is for)

Have now reprogrammed my wiikey with the sp12 programmer, still no luck with backups. Have measured every connection with a multimeter too, all points checks out perfect

Is now going to try it with the openwii code instead

I had the same problem. No matter what I did the Wiikey would not seem to work? I had someone tell me to tweak the laser pot just a hair counter clockwise...I did that and boom everything works great now.
I actually went through 2 wiikeys and then switched to the YAOSM (which still didnt work) until I got this tip.
Everything I throw at the wii works now  biggrin.gif

This was my original install before moving to the yaosm

OMG those poor chips/consoles.  You guys should practice with an old mobo or something first.

I cant believe my eyes.

I think that I did I fine job on the d2B. Solder points very defined on the the shaved area and not even a trace of solder possibly touching other points.

Looks a hell of a lot easier when you have a pic blown up...in all actuality that is sooo tiny  sleep.gif

Anyways. As I stated before check your dvd drive laser. Fixed it all up for me and now all media I throw at it works great. Switch to the Yaosm also  laugh.gif  much better solution in my opinion.

Here's my solution for the cut-pins D2B chips: a 0-ohm resistor array!

And yes, I was in a hurry (customer was waiting) and didn't use the correct Dremel attachment...
