Okay, I know, I know.. there's error codes etc. stickied elsewhere

The victim I mean xbox is a 04/2005, starts the blob, shows the microsoft logo at the bottom, then that's it. pressing the eject button will open the tray, but it resets again.
no games, no dashboard.

No error codes I can find on the screen.  Not to worry, this is a 'pre-broke' as-is special, so it's more or less a 'unbrick this x-box' challenge. From everyone's experience..

 what have I run into, a dvd or hdd problem, or worse, a mb problem?
shoot, I was glad to see it power up and display video.. so something's still working.

I got this dirt-cheap from a guy who may or may not be competent, so it's been opened,
not sure if it was the store owner or the old owner..

I have a soft-modded xbox (or two) to swap components. I don't care about long-term with the dvd,
 once I get it soft-modded it's going in a centipede cabinet to play vertical games only via mame..

I'm getting out the special screwdriver and going into it component-by-component, but thought I'd post to see what insight others have gotten at this point in the 'challenge'.

I've even got an actual mod chip to use if need be, (I didn't do such a hot job on the soldering, so I soft-modded it later, chip's still in the other box)
