What Can You Do With A Wii Now Days?
« on: May 15, 2007, 08:43:00 AM »

Hey.

Im a proud owner of a fine moded XBOX 1 and what I really like about that is the whole homebrew scene. Now when im planning to buy a Wii or a XBOX 360 im in kind of a state where alot of questions arise. Like...

1) I know the Wii is "modable", but im really very new to it, so I wonder if there's any nice homebrews that I really should know about and so on. Are there any central websites in the Wii comunity like this one is for the XBOX?

2) How do the possibilities for future moding look. Should I wait a few months, i.e are the modchips out now kind of first generation buggy and soon to be second generation flashy.

3) From what I gather a harddrive is nothing that is supported by the Wii right now, do you guys reckon it will be? Either as a official addon, or as something modchip related? I figure if your gonna have backups its so nice to store them on the hdd like on the XBOX, but maybe this is irrelevant. Maybe a hdd is nothing any Wii owner needs?

like I said, im a noob when it comes to Wii, but I love playing the games for it, and you know... why not make the best of two worlds. If the moding is allright for the Wii im going for that. if anyone can answer some of the questions or just generaly support me into buying a Wii with or with out a modchip please do so!

Peace

the wiikey modchip is upgradeable

hdd should be possible, there are usb ports on the wii so that is somewhere to start

however at the moment you can use sd cards for homebrew (possibly backups but you'd need a fairly big sd card, which i don't) should you not want to keep burning discs

There are no Wii modchips like on the Xbox1 right now. All that is available, is Drivechips. They are basically the same kind of mod that is available for the 360. It is an alternate BIOS for the DVD drive, not the machine.

There is no Wii homebrew. But, the current mods allow you to run backups for both Wii and Gamecube as well as Gamecube homebrew.

Waiting is up to you, but there are modchips for about $5 out now. Might as well get one, because you can have both a drivechip and a regular modchip at the same time, if a regular modchip ever even becomes available.

For more info about the drivechips look here:

and also in my sig.

rather then talk about the different moding methods here are some of the things you can actually DO with a Wii:

-Play backups of Wii and GC games
-Play imports of some Wii games and all GC games
-Stream video, audio and pictures via the webrowser (no moding requires: it uses a program on your PC).
-Play classic games from the SNES/Genesis era and older emulated near flawlessly as well as some N64 games (via gamecube homebrew emus) running from a disc or from an SD card.
-Run other gamecube homebrew from a disc or SD card such as MP3 players, homebrew games, and other applications

-all the other stuff a Wii can normally do:
--Browse the web
--check the weather
--send message and Mii's to other Wii owners.
--etc.

Other than a modchip, casemods, LED mods, there are a few interesting mods but nothing to get too excited over.  They are mods that allow you to place certain expansions internally to make the console look cleaner.  For example, people have mounted the gamecube memory cards internally as well as the gameport adapter for the wavebird.

i was wondering the same thing, but after actually playing one i realized the only thing you can really do is wave your arms around like a loon and flop on a chair after a game of wii sports

Sounds kinda cool to me. Anyway. Thanx for the responses its gonna be a Wii sooner or later. Seems like there is at least a scene when it comes to homebrew and moding and thats actualy what I wanted to know. I have faith in all of the talented and generous people that puts thier time into this. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Kinda sucks though that the retail price of a Wii right now here in sweden is  around 2700 SEK (roughly 400$). Im hoping the increased production is gonna take care of that as we have had a significant shortage. Like go into the store today and order a Wii get it in July kinda deal. Thinking about ordering one from Germany, in fact im gonna look into that right now.

Peace.

I see that you said you can run homebrew from a disc or sd card on a wii. by any chance do you have a link to a tutorial that will let me run homebrew from a DISC since i spent all my funds on the AR for game cube and a sd card thinking i could use the one on the wii. without buying a "gecko sd adapter". THank you in advance
