Fine rosin core solder should work fine.

As for modchipstore.com:

Make sure you check the dates, some of those are a few years old.

ok just picked up a soldering station.....is there any type of solder I should be looking for....Also does anyone have any opinion on modchipstore.com....I can order the chip with the screwdriver at a great price.  But I dont know if this is a respectable site or not....it looks respectable but who knows.

You are starting to scare me bro, LOL  smile.gif

If you've never soldered before I'd recommend finding an old motherboard or something and practicing on it, a lot. First timers will tend to glob solder on and overheat the connection. The WiiKey is a fairly easy install with a bit of experience, but it's also easy to bridge the 4 lower connections, and easy to burn pads off if you don't have any experience.

Hi guys I have never soldered a modchip but have soldered a little is it alot easier to use wire then to solder straight to the board?

Also what type of tape do I use to hold the chip down

cheers

Double sided tape would work but, I find it easier to wire the bottom small pads and just jumper the top 2 pads with some solder. The top pads will keep the chip attached without the need for tape.

Would 24 AWG wire work for this job?  Thanks

I personally prefer 015" diameter Silver Bearing solder

it's thinner which makes it easier to work with and the fumes aren't as bad. though it takes little more skill to get a solid connection since the melting point is higher meaning your window between good connection and burnt trace is smaller. Also the lack of a rosin core tends to make my iron tips last 5 times as long before replacing.

though, using a 15W grounded iron (only $8 at radio shack) makes it difficult to burn up traces.

As for wire use 30ga knyar wire for all modchip data connection

for power and ground connection I'd recommend 24-20 ga

the shorter the wire length the better.

So would the 24 AWG be sufficient for the wii soldering job or should I go pick up 30 AWG wire.

I haven't modded a Wii yet so I don't know how big the solder locations are. I can say that if they're as small as a lot of people claim their are... or if you need to solder to broken pins on the drive chip, then you'll definitely want 30ga... as it is even 30ga is difficult to work with when dealing with such small solder points, 24 ga might even be impossible.
