Wiikey Tutorial
« on: May 03, 2007, 09:22:00 PM »

Hi all, I'm a huge soldering n00b, and I was just wondering if there are any Wiikey installation tutorials around that explain exactly how to solder the chip.  I looked around but most assume that the reader has some soldering experience.  If not I guess I'll just have to practice soldering. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)   Thanks!

There are many soldering videos on youtube.
Use flux, tape, 30AWG wire, 60/40 solder, low Wattage iron(~15W) and patience.
30W will work, you just have less time to solder before burning things.

Practice on a broken motherboard 1st.

did you do a wire install or a quick solder?  It looks like the wire install is more complex but gives better results.  Is a quick solder something to be avoided?

Quicksolder installs are..well..quick. You basically just dab solder on 5-6 points and you're done. The downside to this, is that it's a hell of a lot harder to uninstall.

Wire installs take a little longer, and perhaps take a little more skill. But, uninstalling is way more easier.

Essentially, either way, you're doing the same thing.

It was my first time soldering when I installed mine.  Get everything mentioned above, try to get some core rosin solder.  (That might be the same kind as mentioned earlier).  Then get an old motherboard (or smash one out of something old you dont use anymore) and get used to how the solder heats up and how to warm up the existing solder and stick the wire into it.  Once you do that a few times, you'll feel confident.  Just take it slow and easy.  If you mess up or get the feeling you've heated the board too much, do something else for a little bit and it will cool down.

It's really not that difficult, you're basically just connecting a wire to two points.

Hmm, it seems i will definitely need to practice first.  How is the wiikey secured on the motherboard of the wii?  Soldering isn't enough is it?  Is it just taped down with electrical tape?

Thats what I did with mine.  I got the idea from some of the posts at teammodders site, so it's probably fine.  Others have used double sided tape or hot glue.  Tape just seemed the easiest for me.
