Wiid?
« on: April 25, 2007, 07:27:00 PM »

I've been debating on what modchip to get...and I've constantly been looking at twistedsymphony's wiki-chart looking for updates/new chips/etc..

The Wiid looks pretty good. Retails for $34.99 at MOD-CHIP.com... It seems to be a nice combination between the Wiikey and the Cyclowiz. There are no known clones, supports all DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW, it's quick solder, built-in audio fix, no on-board storage, supports backup/recovery, no status LED, supports a disable switch.

From MOD-CHIP.com:

I'm personally a fan of the wiikey, but then again it's all I've used (At least I know I don't have to deal with clones.. get them from the wiikey team wink.gif)

The wiid looks, at least on paper, like it should do just fine, though without having used one I'd be hard pressed to recommend it.

Agreed that it does look like a really solid chip at a reasonable price...

I've never heard anyone rave about them... but I've also never heard anyone complain about them.

either no one is using them or everyone that's bought one is content with it.

If I were going to BUY a chip though, I'd probably go for a Wiip... it looks like as good as the other big players but it's only $20, opensource and comes with a programmer that could also be used to flash your own Chiip, or Open Wii.

Some of the features those chips offer are just inconsequential. Audio Fix? Seriously... this only applies to backups made before Gamecube modchips were around, when people would stream the ISOs from their desktop over to the Gamecube they audio needed to be futzed with to keep it from skipping constantly. If you're making your own backups or working with GC backups you made without tweaking the audio then the Audio fix is useless.

Not only that, there are apps you can run against "audiofixed" ISOs to make them normal again.

I don't know about anyone else but I burn exclusively to -R media, support for other formats just isn't necessary.

"Stealth Mode" is a sham as is the ability to deactivate the chip. These chips are drivemods... they're all "stealth" and deactivating them is pretty much useless because they're undetectable.

Quick solder might make an easy install but it's a bitch to remove and should be avoided anyway.

Honestly the features that I think are necessary:
-Support for the console/drive version I plan to use it on... this goes without saying
-Support for gc and wii imports and homebrew without swapping (the only real feature that matters IMO)
-Upgradeable firmware: preferably via disc so you don't have to crack open the console to upgrade it.
-Support for the media formats I prefer to use
-Maybe A status LED because it's a nice tool to help diagnose if the chip is working properly or not after installation and upgrades.

Audio Fix?

You know twisted, I'm rather shocked!
Stream fix to me is really important.  My Qoob pro works great but it's missing one feature... Can't read 4.7gb multi iso discs.  That right there puts my GC in the "hardly ever turned on" category since the Wii.  There is nothing like making a backup of 7 games you own and slapping them all on one disc to boot on the wii.  I understand what you mean about the age of the backups, but I'll be damned if I backup Ikaruga again.

And as for Compatibility, Me personally, I burn my backups to whatever I have handy since my chick mongoloid handles all my DVDs.  My Wii seems to prefer +R media, so you might give one a try.  I could really care less about RW support, but I do think that it's important to offer +R support without bit setting.

Other than that, you have hit the nail dead on.  While all sorts of extra features are nice, as long as I can play any game I can backup, and burn them to any dvd I want, and upgrade via a disc. I'm a happy camper.

EDIT: Just noticed that the Wiid says it supports multigame Wii backups  What app does that? I wasn't aware of a multi boot maker for Wii yet, just GC.  Personally I would buy a wiikey if I wasn't using opensource

You recommended the Wiip, yet, the Wiip is only upgradeable via serial?

"upgradeable" is a requirement

doing that via Disc is a prefrence

There is only one chip that actually meets all of the requirements and prefrences I've set and thats the cyclowiz, which I wouldn't buy for other reasons  tongue.gif

Have you ever played a Nintendo Wii... on Wiid?

Reread this thread and also read this chart:
http://wiki.nintendo...le=Wii_modchips

P.S. I am not endorsing the Wiid. I just found that appropriate for some reason. I just woke up, and I will probably regret that, when I read it later today.
