Wiikey Disc Read Errors
« on: April 25, 2007, 01:27:00 PM »

I've recently installed a wiikey, and I was successfully able to boot up the wiikey utlilities boot disc.  But when I try to play a backup, I can see the splash screen from the Disc channel, but right after the wrist strap screen I usually get:

"The Game Disc could not be read. Please read the Wii Operations Manual for more information."

I'm pretty sure its correctly soldered in place (I get positive feedback from all the contacts on the wiikey to the legs of the chip).  I've been following the backup guide on Afterdawn's forum:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/471073

The only game I've tried so far is Zelda though, but with several different media.  I burn at the slowest speed I can (2.4x).  Any other thoughts?

For Burning, I usually use Nero & the NEC 3550A.

I've also read that the Wiikey doesn't like DVD+Rs, but in a few other places (including Wiikey's official website) "true DVD+Rs" should work.  Anybody know the truth?  And what the heck do they mean by "true" DVD+R?

when i got my wiikey installed and burned a game i had the same problem. I used recordnow the first time and got that message, I went on IRC and people told me to use ImgBurn and make sure not to use the verify option, I tried that and now every game loads. I would give ImgBurn a try since its free software.

OK, this seems to be what works best for me, I've finally settled on a decent media, DVD+Rs, and using Nero I run into the DRE's less often.  But it does work for me if I just eject and re-insert the disc when wii whiines.

Its quite depressing i am getting so many errors tried so many types of media ... i think it may be my burner?   Anyone having trouble with a 2500a nec?

Also i think a couple games i have tried are not the right size ... i am sick or wasting DVDs   i use memorex +R  those are good right?  I also been stealing roomys verbat -R with simular results i did get trauma center to work using my roommates burner a newer nec and some HP -r's

The Wiikey can read either:
A) DVD+R with bitsetting DVD+R or
B) DVD+R with bitsetting DVD-ROM

Option A is obviously the default for DVD burners. A little hacking is needed for option B.

True DVD+R means there is no need to change the bitsetting to DVD-ROM.
DVD+R with the bitsetting DVD-ROM is a little bit more compatible with readers than the default setting, therefor encouraged by most people, even for movies. So, in this case I would bitset just to be sure.

I was having similar problems the first day.

Media is the Key. I was using Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R's.  Zelda is the only one that actually plays fine. I think the batch wasn't that great I noticed some dye smearing on some of them. They are actually fairly old and I haven't used any single layers in a while. Anyway, switched to Imation DVD+R's that I got dirt cheap and they all work great.
One thing make sure you play the game and not just get to the start screen, I have a few that would get errors with the Taiyo's when the game started but it would boot up fine. To prove it was the media I copied the Taiyo to the Imation and it worked fine ( moderators I am not condoning a backup of a backup, I am just stating that the media was to blame, original backup was promptly destroyed as it did not properly work anyway)

So try different media and try this setup below :

LG drive
Rawdump
IMGburn ( MAKE SURE VERIFY IS OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ) (Set speed to Auto)
Imation DVD+R's

That works for me.

Did you try burning at 4X or 2X with your TY?

I tried lower speeds as well, I think it was just a bad batch or they were old. I usually like Taiyo Yuden, just haven't had any luck with them for Wii Backups.

As I said I think they were just old or a bad batch. I use to use them to make Movie Backups (<-  When being PC sounds totally absurd!) and never had issues. I switched from Ridata's to TY's a while ago but was getting so many Verbatim DL's at a decent price I was actually starting to use them on a regular basis without compression. I have nothing against TY's, they just haven't worked for me in this particular case.
