New Wii Revision Combats Mod-chips
« on: April 11, 2007, 08:23:00 AM »

basically all they did was make the solder points harder to get to... think d0 sized... also the locations are moved slightly so some quick solder chips wont line up (but they'll still work with wires).

Most chip makers have already tested and claimed that their chips will work with the "V2" board layout.  wink.gif

It just makes the install a little harder, that's all... really that's all Nintendo has ever done to combat piracy.

It's a good tactic IMO, stopping hackers is futile... so you might as well just make it difficult or expensive enough that most people wont bother doing it themselves. At that point it's much easier going after organized installers then it is going after individual pirates.

This thread is a bit old, but if you're in the US you don't have the 'new' board revision; its seems it was only rolled out in europe...

In any case, they just removed one solder pad so you have to solder directly to the IC for that point.

Looks like they removed the legs from the IC also.

This doesn't make any sense to me. But, I don't know that much about it.

its still moddable

the stub left by the leg is just enough to solder to if you're crafty, and you can also dremmel back the chip a lil bit with a very fine point bit and solder to the actual contact in the chip. ive seen pics of it done on a few different sites, and a few places that offer it as a service.

Yup; I've done 3 wiis so far that have been missing the legs.. I dremmel the IC and solder wires from the exposed traces to the chip.

I modded a Wii last night with the three cut pins.  "Rebuilt" each stub to its solder pad on the PCB, no dremeling required.  Then it was business as usual.

Anyone know a good part number for a 0-ohm resistor pack that would drop in properly in this space?  Or any word of a "rebuild board" (it would have to be TINY!) in the works?

More accurately, I should have said "resistor array"...

When they run out of their current supply of mutilated D2B chips though they bring on the ones with all internal circuitry removed as well.  Team XEcuter claims to have solved this problem but will not discuss it further on their forums and admits to never having designed or tested this functionality, nor having ever seen a D2C chipped Wii.  Can't buy a Wii anywhere, soon it will be all futile.

Eeek! Soldering to the stubs sounds like a PITA tongue.gif

Yeah that doesn't inspire me with confidence, I once planned to send that man US dollars in exchange for RAM upgrading.  Because I can't do it myself.  Because chip pins are insanely small.

Yes, it was a pain in the arse!  laugh.gif

I think I lucked out, actually... I had the aforementioned "stubs" (about 1/16") to work with.  I've seen recent photos from others where the pins have been cut flush with the plastic package on the chip, and the plastic has needed to be dremeled away!  ohmy.gif
