Upgrading Hdd On Softmodded Xbox!
« on: October 29, 2007, 02:18:00 PM »

Okey so here goes!

I just bought a IDE 250 GB Hard Drive to my xbox. My computer has a SATA as original HD and when I disconnect it as the tutorial says and boot the computer with the IDE Slave in my CD-Rom drive and the IDE Master in my newly bought HD (the one I intend to use in my xbox). Anyway, when I choose to boot through cd-rom drive it appear some text saying that "there“s no operating system.." But when I boot with the SATA drive connected but not the new one, I get the program to boot. (im trying to create a xbox hd with xboxhd v1.9) So I guess I need to change my bios or something to get it to work.. tried alot of things but nothing seems to work (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

Any ideas?

There should be two connectors on the IDE cable going to the CD-Rom drive. Put the jumper on the back of the HD as master and the jumper on the back of the CD drive as slave. Connect both of them to the cable and boot.

Yeah, there's a jumper on the cd-rom drive as well (unless its a sata drive, I guess, I have seen those). You can have the cd-rom drive on the same cable as the hdd, though, just make sure on is master and the other is slave.

I had the same problem that you're describing, though, when the computer says that "there is no operating system". For some reason, after I took off my sata drives my bios wouldn't boot my cd-rom drive first, so I had to use another part of the bios to force my cd-rom drive to boot first.

Don't know if that's your problem, but it makes no sense for the cd rom drive to give a "no operating system" error.

You can try to boot the computer with the IDE cable off the HD. When you get to the Main screen in Xboxhdm, put the cable on the HD then type in Xboxhd.

Check if your bios has any settings to disable SATA or make PATA primary.

Unplug your SATA drives from the PC when performing this. The only thing that should be plugged in is the CD and HD you are working with.

Well the Sata cable is unplugged. The only thing connected are IDE Slave to Cd-drive and Master to hdd.

What's happening now?

Do you have any friends with older computers that you could try this on?

If it is the SATA interface causing you problems, then using an older IDE only box would circumvent that in a hurry.

Or if the SATA interface is taking up the HDA & HDB spots, maybe you could run the xbox drive over the SATA with the proper adapter?  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Unfortunately I don't know anybody with an older computer who's willing to mess around with it. I guess I'll just install it in my computer and run it from there.. But thank you all for your time and support!  happy.gif

You may try to hotswap it. There is a video in the "Utilities that run on the PC" section that shows how to do it. You would disconnect the CD drive and use that cable.

What is the model number of the motherboard you are using?

I'm used to seeing SATA drives mount on SDA SDB etc, and PATA drive mount on HDA HDB etc.

You might try leaving your SATA drive connected but using the bios setting for PATA=HDA,HDB SATA=HDC,HDD and then making sure the bios boot order is set to CDROM first.
