Interesting.

I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one assuming it's truly legitimate (yes, I know, many claim it is..even that Administrator at that forum you linked too)

But one question, do we even know how to make backups yet? I know I don't. But apparently some people do. So, I'm assuming there's a tutorial out there somewhere..seeing as how that's basically what this modchip is for.

Anyways, Nice find!

Just because it can play backups doesn't mean you can make backups. Look at the DS for example. This is great news if you can really create and play backups.

I'd be happy if it could at least play GC backups

I read somewhere to dump your own games you need some special type of DVD drive for your pc then use dvdinfo similar to the 360 dumping way. Also remember reading it takes about 50 hours to dump.. so  blink.gif

Interesting, selling backups is legal here. Lets see how fast will they pop up. I don't like "backups" It can lead to bad things

This was bound to happen soon enough. You know what I'm talking about if you saw the Wii security presentation a few weeks back. It is possible to create your own backups with the proper tools (don't ask me how, I've never tried yet) so like you say, it shouldn't be illegal under your DMCA.

I'm certainly interested in this.  I really like the original Xbox's ability to play backup copies and store games on the hard drive.  I recently got an Xbox 360 and a couple games, including Far Cry.  My first time playing it, the switch on the cable was set to "HD" instead of "SD" for my TV, so I tilted it forward to push the button and SCREEEECH, cut a nice ring into my brand new Far Cry game disc.  I know you can make hack the Xbox 360 to play backups, but the whole process is just too difficult and now I'm out an expensive game tongue.gif  I keep my Wii games in a nice case and I'm very careful, but at $50 a pop I'm always worried about them getting scratched.

We didn't have this problem growing up with Sega and Nintendo's cartridge system.  I wonder how many broken discs kids get today, I always manhandled my games growing up and they were never worse for the wear...

I dunno if I believe this chip this chip is real. Something just doesn't seem right about it. Usually it seems like theres more information given about these when they are the real deal and/or reputable shops carrying them. Guess we'll know for sure when we start hearing excuses come the 1st or when people start getting scammed.

If it is real though it'll be a letdown that they were just focused on facilitating the piracy side of things. Sure you can run "backups", but can't play imports. So much for homebrew too =\

but we don't have to buy anything to mod the 360

this is a product for the sole use as a way to pirate

edit:
also, from the pics, it looks like it is just a single DIP with wiinja printed on the top of it, I don't really see this happening either

So were the PlayStation and first-gen (boot-disc) PS2 mods, all based around the 4MHz PIC12C508 or PIC12C509.

Atmel are now squeezing 20MHz microcontrollers with 8K of flash memory, 512 bytes of EEPROM and 512 bytes of RAM into 8-pin DIP packages, check out the ATtiny85.

The supply and ground connections used in the picture suggest a 12C508 or 12C509 rather than an ATtiny though.

The modchips for the 360 are for the DVD drive. They only allow backups as well. There's been a LOT more developement with software hacking lately, but soon enough someone is going to hack each of these by means of a chip.
