I have a 32" ws crt non HD.. I just got myself my first nexgen console and I soooo wish I had a bigass HDTV now.. oh well..

But my new shiny 360 can never feel HD in its current state.. it sounds like a f-ing airplain is lifting off every time I load a game. Not Cool.

you can get a cheap projector for 400-500$ now adays. no point in building one, i looked into it, id rather spend the 2k on a decent one

expect to pay $300 every 2000 hours for a bulb though. not cool.

thats the big deal i have with commercial prjectors.

15 odd quid for 6000 hours is quite tidy! Fingers crossed for a 720p panel, they have found a few but no clear winner yet.

I thought that at first too... but I've had my current projector for about 3 years now, I use it daily and I haven't hit 2K yet... not to mention it's a 3-4K bulb..

and as I mentioned before, I'm looking for a new projector... so really in my experience the bulb life is longer then the life of my interest in the product  laugh.gif

Don't forget big box rear projection units have the same bulb life issues, Plasmas have a half life and even direct view LCDs have bulbs that need replacing (though their life span is closer to 5-10K depending on the model).

I figure if I buy a nice 720p DLP now, by the time I'm bored with it I can pick up a nice 1080p LED-DLP and no worry about bulb life beerchug.gif

You present some good points about diy pjs. I have seen very good results with little spent. I have access to the tools and have done extensive research. I am relatively confident about the whole project. I will post pics for you guys when I am done. I have yet to order the parts yet. The quality of diy projectors has increased considerably. We will see.

Holy crap, I wanna party at twistedsymphony's place!

Anyway, I passed up a deal on a Sharp DT-400 (720p native) for $600... I'm renting a house and don't really have a good spot for a screen.  But I'm definitely building a theater/game room when I buy a house...  and a garage/workshop is a must, also.

I've heard pretty good things about the LL premade projector. I personly want to build my own for the experience and as a hobby.

kinda stolen from maxconsole, but it was just a youtube link :L

Wii-diculous - Playing the Wii in a Movie Theater
YouTube link
pretty bad ass.

Since they obviously had a camera in the theatre, they're obviously pirates and this shouldn't be condoned.
/ignorant exec.

Seriously, that'd be bad ass. I want a job at a local theatre now just so I can play GoW Live matches on a screen like that....

Well since TS took over, everyone oooh'd and ahhh'd about his set up and shunned mine, i figured i would repost some new pics of my theater room lol.  Its pretty much done right now because we dont have money for carpet so that will come in later. I had some left over padding though so its better then nothing i guess.  The actual viewing size is 139 inches from corner to corner. The celing is a flat gray, the trim is a semi gloss gray and then the walls are velvet black.

It is bad ass and more than most any of us have at home.  As long as you're happy with what you have and all that stuff.

Great Job!

I think everyone's setup evolves... it took me years to build mine and it wasn't until I moved into my current house that it was actually complete, and now I'm into the cycle of replacing outdated components  and making improvements to the room. Don't go thinking I just snapped my fingers and dropped all that cash over a long weekend  wink.gif

The Summer after my Sophomore year in college I owned nothing but a Dreamcast and  25" CRT. My roommate the previous year had a cheap home theater in a box that we enjoyed using when playing movies on his PS2. I wasn't going to be living with him so I decided to start building a good surround sound system.

I did my research and decided that I'd rather build a no compromise system that would last me at least a decade rather then just some cheap all in one package that would probably sound like crap and break after a few years.

I worked my ass off with 2 jobs that summer to make school spending money and start my home theater. I saved about $1000 and I used half to buy a refurbished Marantz surround Sound Receiver (about $800 new I got it for about $450) and a pair of Refurbished Cambridge Soundworks Towers for about $550 shipped ($1200 new). They each came with 10 year warranties so though they were refurbished I wasn't too worried about them breaking and I felt I was definitely getting my money's worth. I had to sit on them both for a few months before I could set them up pertinently because I didn't have the space at my parent's place.

I enjoyed awesome stereo sound on the Dreamcast for quite a while. I had a friend who was going to throw out some old tower speakers that weren't working right so he gave them to me and for about $20 I managed to build some new crossovers for them and used them for my rear channels. They worked for what I payed and actually matched the tonality of the fronts pretty well. I soon got an Xbox and started using that for DVDs (we used my new roommates laptop for that prior). Soon after that I won a Barco 500 CRT projector in a bet (a long story in and of itself). I hadn't planned on getting a projector but it was a cool thing to have, I didn't have any good wall space so I made a screen out of a bed sheet and some PVC pipe. Before the end of the year I bought a good center channel for about $100 and the following summer I bought a real screen on eBay for about $250 (it was a $500 screen that was discounted because it had a dent in the recoil housing).

When I graduated college I bought myself a DLP projector for about $1000, I was living with my parents again so I had to put the surround sound in storage but the projector was small enough that I could use it. Almost a year later when I bought my house I ditched the crappy towers I was using for the rears for some real satellites, my GF also bought me 15" self power sub-woofer as a birthday gift which finished the sound system after many years. it took a good two months before we remodeled the basement to be acceptable for use as a home theater. The couch was financed when we bought the house, the bar came with the house and the pub table was a house warming gift.

After a while of manually switching inputs on a really crappy pelican switcher I bought a nice remote controlled Psyclone. I haven't done anything in nearly 2 years, saving for the next big purchase but just last week I bought a Harmony remote which I'm loving and I'm planning on upgrading my projector in the next couple of months with a $2000 ish DarkChip3 based system.

Beyond the projector the next step might be some new lighting in the room, and perhaps some new wall treatments or a new or fixed up ceiling. The next piece of equipment I replace will probably be either the screen or the receiver.

It's an evolving process and it's taken me many years to build it up to where it is today  smile.gif

he he he thanks for the info. That sounds about like what ive been through as well.  I started with some REALLY old hand me down speakers and amp from my dad. The amp was so old that is was built out of wood and the speakers pretty much came from the same era.  Everything worked great though and it was more then i had ever hoped to have until i got my first surround sound system.  I jumped straight into a $1500 system while still living with my parents.  Then came gaming systems, getting married and a 65 inch HDTV.  We then moved out and got our house.  The surround sound and HDTV was our primary way of watching movies and playing games until i decided that i needed a dvd player with component output since mine only did svideo.

Im working 2 jobs right now to help pay for stuff so we decided that we could afford a dvd player and took off to best buy.  Well when we got there we saw all this nice theater setups and wanted to get one for our projector that i got a few months back.  Well we asked about a few things and the guy told us that if we spend over $1000 then it is 3 years no interest.  We caved in and spend $1800 on a new theater system.  All our new stuff went in our family room with our HDTV and the old stuff went into the projector room.

Here is my family room FYI.

Anyway all this should be in the "my setups" but i guess it does go along with this title as well  tongue.gif

Damn, can I come over? j/k
Nice ass setup, though. Too bad I live in an apartment; don't have the space to set up something that nice sad.gif
I was thinking of ghanging to DLP, though, and just take my entertainment center out.  I could move the DVD player, but now that I think about it, I could probably just use my PC and stream video to the projector (if not directly, then with XBMC). Then I have to get rid of a TV (kinda do already). I also thought maybe I should save my money, and buy a nice plasma (since they have 25 year ones now). Anybody know some pros & cons for both?
