Virtual Console And Usb Storage
« on: December 11, 2006, 06:34:00 AM »

I don't have my Wii yet (LONG story)...

but I was curious if anyone could answer a couple of questions about the VC games... I was wondering if the games you download bare any resemblance to the roms used in most emulators? My guess is it's different but the underlying question for me is if the roms are essentially straight rips from the original carts or if they're rebuilt re-releases similar to the games on Xbox Live.

Separate from that can the downloaded games be transfered to a USB mass storage device or even the SD card?

I have an idea for a couple of different hacks and I'd like to know about these aspects of the console to determine whether or not they're feasible.

those are cool, have you seen the adapters for the micro sd cards yet?

and to twisted, I am pretty sure that I read that you can't save virtual console games to the usb storage devices, but I'm not 100% on that

I've got a 2GB MicroSD for my cell phone, it came with an adapter... man that thing is scary tiny (Smaller and thinner then a dime)... I'm glad I can read/write to it through my phone because I'm afraid I'd break it just taking it out....

It's nice though, I dump a bunch of MP3s onto my phone and then I can plug my phone into my car stereo and listen to it while I drive  smile.gif

While we're on the topic of flash memory, I wonder how difficult it would be to swap out the 512MB SAMSUNG K9F4G08U0A NAND flash... I wonder if you could replace it with a removable card... like a 2nd SD slot or something.

I thought all roms were in .bin format, as they are just binary dumps of the onboard Rom chip? shouldn't this be very useful?

Man, I think my heart jsut skipped a beat, that is Awesome. I hate always trying to fiddle aroudn finding my SD reader, and then when I cant find it having to use my GP2X as a card reader.   I cant wait to get one, hopefully they arent overly expensive, It looks like I will break it evenually while it's plugged in and I am drunk

I hate to do this again (hijacking your thread) but with that SD/USB card, and a modded xbox with XBMC 2.0.0 FAT and a USB mod...

You could move your roms back and forth.

EDIT: More supposin'....

Maybe an xbox app that packs and unpacks the .bin files?

from my understanding although files can be copied to the sd card. they are not playable off the sd or even when copied back to the wii.

I remember reading this when people tried to back up their vc games on an Sd card and then delete it from the wii. they could not get the game on the card to work and had to rebuy the games

REBUY the game?!?  blink.gif

you mean it doesn't keep track of what you've purchased?

this seems like a major friggin flaw... what happens when you fill up your internal memory?

All channels, including VC roms, can be transfered to SD (I didn't see an option for USB, but then again, I didn't have a USB drive to test with) The get stored /private/wii/title/(FOUR DIGIT ALPHANUMERIC CODE)/content.bin

They are wii specific, if you try to transfer any channel to another wii, it gives you an error (this channel can not be copied to this wii).

iND released a copy of f-zero VC, that could apparently work, but I and many others have downloaded to realize, its just the straight channel file, nothing special, and does not work.

I imagine if someone had the patients to collect a single channel from a surplus of people, and compare them all in a hex editor, and compare the differences, the security could be bet, but it doesn't seem that anyone is doing this yet.

The wii shop channel hack can apparently be used to add wii points to your system, and/or download the content for free. This isn't sure to be true, but there are videos floating around of a man who did it. He isn't releasing any information at this time.
