Retrieving Files From Xbox Hdd Using Pc
« on: October 16, 2007, 05:09:00 AM »

OK, I've got a small problem, seems like there's something wrong with my 500GB xbox HDD, for some reason the xbox now refuses to boot, and all I can hear is a clunking noise coming from the HDD. Seems like something might be corrupted. I've removed the HDD and now want to try to retrieve some of the data on it through my PC.

What's the best tool for the job to do this? Either using XP or Linux?

Cheers

Unlock it and use Xplorer360 to read it.

This is for an original xbox, so will Xplorer360 still apply? Also, whats the easiest way of unlocking considering I can't boot it in the xbox?

If it is locked, the master password should be set to either TEAMASSEMBLY or XBOXSCENE. Use all caps.

Make a boot disk with Atapwd on it and use that to unlock it using the master password. If you have a softodded Xbox, you should have the Xboxhdm disk used to lock it. On there you can boot into option 3 and type unlockhd -a and it will unlock it for you. Or boot to option 4 and type in atapwd to bring up that program.

If you have a mod chip, the drive probably isn't locked.

Xplorer360 works on Xbox 1 drives.

I've run into a similar problem, I was able to unlock my hard drive, but I'm having trouble accessing the drive using Xplorer360. My hard modded xbox recently went into a coma and now I'd like to try and access files off of my 80GB xbox hard drive.

I've already unlocked it using Atapwd and XBOXSCENE as the master password and even made sure it didn't have the locked flag. However, when I go into Windows XP and try to get Xplorer360 to open the hard drive I only get Partition 0 and 1 and both are empty.

The drive shows up in Disk Management and I even initialized the disk through that but to no avail. The xbox hard drive is connected to my Secondary Master IDE slot. And Xplorer360 seems to crash at random when opening the xbox hard drive. Is there something I'm missing?

I can't even get XP to see the disk in Disk Management, does that mean it's locked? It's from a modchipped xbox running XBMC etc and is connected to my second IDE cable as a slave.

I'm not too sure... this is actually my first time doing this myself. Did you try unlocking it with Atapwd? Because the drive should have a flag in that program to let you know if it's locked. Once I was able to unlock and disable the lock in Atapwd using the master password, it stays unlocked even after rebooting. The drive then showed under Disk Management but was offline so I had to initialize the disk. But of course under Windows XP it doesn't detect the fatx partition. But after all of that I'm stuck now.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Odd... I can't seem to edit my previous post. Anyways I was able to get Xplorer360 to detect the hard drive now after connecting it through Primary Master IDE. I'm currently backing up my files now, so far so good.

@ scoobie doobie
The spans of time given to edit posts are very small. But that's beside the point. I am glad to hear that your situation is going well, for the moment.

@ prezet
Sorry man, even my locked hd shows up in disk management, reguardless of its locking status.

ok, well I can finally get Disk Management to see the drive, I've tried unlocking it with atapwd, and I think it's unlocked, the symbols for the drive are:

S E L F X V
+ - - + -

however, now when I launch Xplorer360 and try to get it to detect the drive, it reports an error 'No FATX drives found'.

any ideas?

I've put the xbox hdd as primary master, does it matter what the system drive is set to? I think it's on secondary slave at the minute.

The xbox hdd should be a slave and your system a master, thats the way I have done it ever since the beginning of my time (2 weeks ago... lol). Make sure Windows recognizes the drive too, you have to go Control Panel> System> Hardware Tab> Device Manager. Then you might nor might not see it. If you do go right ahead and try Xplorer 360 again. If you do not see the drive you should probably check your connections.

Sounds to me like those "bunch of numbers" are actually the eeprom. We don't have locked drives, they are unlocked or hotswapped. The reason my BIOS does not complain, is that the formatting is in FATX. My BIOS does not pick and choose, as long as it does not have to boot from the repulsive FATX drive. So solve your locked disk problem, you can simply buy a replacement board that you see on the bottom of your drive (dunno what it's really called... lol), it is that that is locked and unlocked with an eeprom. Also try TEAMASSEMBLY (make sure it's in all caps, if you haven't done it in all caps try it in all caps) in ATAPWD. Also, LIVEINFO might be able to see your eeprom, it can see mine (I don't think it supported any of the xbox drives, and if you upgrade it might be supported).

sorry when i say a bunch of numbers, its actually symbols, smiley faces and diamonds..as far as liveinfo, i admit to never using it or really hearing about it but the problem remains, when i start my computer, in order for windows to recognize it as a hard disk drive shouldn't the bios have to be able to read it? and if i let my bios read, it asks for the password...which i don't have. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)  i'm stumped.
