I Played The Wii
« on: November 09, 2006, 08:38:00 PM »

Well, the family took me to NYC today to see the rehersal for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show (much cheaper than the actual show, although the exact same thing).  We got there early, had lunch and, well, someone got to go to the Nintendo World Store biggrin.gif

That was me!!!

I got there expecting a HUGE line.  There were 3 Wiis set up and maybe 4-6 people waiting to play them.  I watched people playing and got to play within 5-10 minutes.  It was amazing.  Baseball was cool, not too much to control though.  Just when to pitch and when to swing the bat (and how hard).  Very awesome.
Next I played a round of tennis, the most fun IMO.  You move the Wiimite up to toss the ball into the air, like in a real serve.  Then, come down like a real serve.
To hit the ball after it is returned to you, you time a forehand/backhand/spike.  The tennis guys move automitically.  There was NO learning curve at ALL for tennis.  When you made contact with the all, you felt a satisfying vibration of the Wiimote.
The, I played a quick round of boxing.  You punch with both the Nunchuk and the Wiimote for left and right punching.  You can also block by bringing them up to your face and duck left and right.  This was also very satisfying, and the speaker in the Wiimote was put to great use.  Hitting the other boxer triggerred a sound from the Wiimote.  It was done in a semi-3rd person perspective.  It was as if the camera was directly behind your boxer's head, but the boxer was transparent and you could see your opponent, but also your own body and gloves, perfectly.  VERY smart desgin there.

Now, on to the GFX.  They are certainly not eyecandy, but the trees in tennis looked very good IMO and I definitely liked the style (Wiisports was the only title to play).  I think it's very unique and makes up for where the system may fall behind others... the GFX department.

The most interesting part: there was a guy, about 25... looked like a typical gamer (you know what I mean, sometimes you know a gamer when you see one, eh?).  Anyone, he was bowling.  And next to him was a 5 year old girl bowling.  She had never played before and neither had he.  They weren't playing against each other, but she kicked his ass.  I am talking to contest.  This guy's buddy was really bad too, but this little girl was GOOD.  And she was only about 5.  And THAT is why the Wii will succeed.  It is a console for everyone and anyone.  Little kids to hardcore gamers to parents (I loved it as much as this little girl did... hell I was content WATCHING people play it).  Pick it up and use it.  Piece of cake.

Any questions and I will try to answer them as best as I can.
Now, I'm tired, so goodnight.

Did the little speaker say, "Body blow, body blow, left hook...?"  tongue.gif

That is awesome you got to play it. Do you think Sports Arcade will be a good enough add-on title, like The Mario franchise was. I guess what I mean is, will people buy the Wii to play the Sports Arcade? Or, will it lose its fun factor?

Schweeeet!

I was reading through T3 magazine this month and also saw that there is a classic controller for the classic games, incase you lot didn't know. Hmm but as most people here a Wii-aholics you may well already know  wink.gif

Glad you thought it was good. I'd hate it if someone said it was crap and didn't work. Like Sony's motion sensors!  laugh.gif

You know, I'm not sure.  For some, yes.  But for others, no.  Let me explain:
My dad loves golf, but he never has time to or the weather isn't good.  If he enjoys playing gold on the Wii, then just THAT might be enough, and THAT is a bundled game.  What about when something like Toger Woods comes out?  And the fact that you can play against other people online who are actually moving around like you  are I think is a pretty big draw.  Also, the games are easy to pick up and play, but I think they are quite difficult to MASTER.
I think for most it will be fun for a long time, but for some it will lose its fun factor pretty quickly.  From what I experinced, I felt like I would enjoy playing it for a while.  It might not be like a Super Mario, but definitely a title that can move systems and get them into consumers' hands.  But you have to admit that, even after a while, Super Mario did get a little reptitive (although it is still fun to play it every once in a while, on Xbox of course tongue.gif)

There is a WII setup at my local game stop and I got to play on it for a while. It was a game where you drive a truck around. To steer you moved the controller back and forth and pressed a button for gas and boost.

It was very responsive and was fun to play.

The only thing I don't get was the way the kiosk was set up. They had it hooked up to a native resolution 1366 by 768 LCD display. If the WII can only output a 480p signal it would have looked much crisper on a TV that has a native resolution of 480p.

It was still fun though despite the graphics and the WII itself is a work of art.

Yeah, at the Wii kiosk at the Nintendo World store, they had the Wiis hooked up to what looked like a 720p Samsung, the same model (but larger) that 360s must be hooked up to, I believe.  But it looked VERY good (I spied a little aliasing, though).

Just curious where in NYC did you see those consoles?  Is it in Toys R US at Time Square?

IIRC Nintendo is only installing Kiosks at GameStops initially... so you might not see them elsewhere until next year.

No, actually in the Nintendo World Store, and they had 3 set up.  Each one had a copy of Wii Sports and you could play any of the included sports.  Tennis, Bowling, Golf, Baseball, Boxing, and maybe another one but I'm not sure.
