my two cents ...... that's an absolutely horrendous name

Revolution was MUCH better.  This must be catering towards the Japanese as the US opinion seems overwhelmingly negative on this one.

ok im gonna start by saying this, this thread didnt need a bunch of replies talkin bout how u dont like the name. It wasnt up to u what they name it! As for the people who are making references to wee-wee's and pissing, What r u guys like 10 years old? I never once thought of pissing or my penis lookin at that name. Wii actually makes sense if u get past the kiddish jokes. And i understand it aint the best name for a console but what is! As for the people talkin bout this is nintendos downfall and they gonna travel the sega path. HAHA r u out of your mind? The gamecube may not have been the best in most eyes but it didnt brake nintendo. They have way more money than sega did/does and even if this system flops, which it really wont. Its pretty safe to say they will make their $ back. And be around for the next go round of consoles. Ill wrap it up here so i dont go off on a few real childish people floating around these boards. I guess thats why i barely even log on anymore

the name sucks, end of story. those are our opinions and we have the right to express them.

[TONE] the only thing holding Nintendo up is the Gameboys. The gamecube failed horribly.

What I dont understand is the fact that Nintendo has been around for more then two decades. M$ and Sony don't have shit on that in the console wars. Nintendo IS gaming. People didn't say, "Im gonna go play some video games" they said Im gonna go play some Nintendo"
Nintendo should have pulled on their name recognition or come up with an acronym like the N.E.S.
Hell I'd rather play with my Nii then my Wii.
20 years is a long time to be in buisness and pull a childish stunt like this.

As for the xbox 360's name, it's from the fact that average american moron would be in a game store or walmart and see an xbox, a GC, and a PS2 and say "hell it's a 2.... it's got to be better then an xbox 1"
now that same moron will say "hell thisey here one is a 360.. that one there's only a 3... I'll take the extra 60"

The Wii name sucks hard. PS2/PS3 sucks hard core. 360 sucks hard core. Nintendo had it's chance to set itself apart by getting a good name. Shame it didn't. I hope and pray they do the famicom deal and switch up the name for the US version.

Nintendo doesn't have the online success that Live has so the "we" aspect could bite them in the ass.

IDK I can't talk about this stupid shit any more.

higher up's even have an opinion..    LINK

Michael Goodman, senior analyst of media and entertainment strategies at The Yankee Group, believes the name change is a mistake. "I thought Revolution had much more meaning," he told GameSpot. "It was an apt description for the console. It was a revolutionary design ... the controller is pretty revolutionary. Wii just doesn’t do it for me. How do we even pronounce this? WEEE? I'm not sure this is technically a word. What is a WEE, W-I-I?"

Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter was more mixed in his assessment. "My initial reaction, of course, is that the name is dumb," he bluntly stated. "However, upon reflection, I thought that the name Game Boy was dumb, REALLY thought that the name Xbox was dumb, and can't even recall my reaction to PlayStation. Let's face it, devices with cool names like Dreamcast and Gizmondo fail, and the lame names seem to do well."

One industry analyst who spoke in the condition of anonymity said flat out the choice was wrong, for a number of reasons. "It's a sound that doesn't exist in Japanese, so Japanese people will struggle to pronounce it."

"Now they have a stupid-sounding manufactured name that probably wouldn't have tested well with English speakers if they'd bothered doing any market research," the analyst said. "And they're going to try to use it to replace an evocative, well-accepted name that people have been using for well over a year. Bad, stupid move."

Volvo is Swedish.

My bad, I meant Voltzwagon.

And I believe its unfair to say the Gamecube was a failure. Just because nobody above the age of 15 wanted it, they don't want Pokemon either, and I would gladly be the CEO of Bandai (or whoever publishes Pokemon stuff) because its one of the the top selling franchises on the planet.

Gamecube caters to kids. There's alot of money in kids. They also didn't take a loss on their consoles, and were not pirated much at all (even now with their mods out).

Xbox caters to the hardcore adult (regardless of what they're trying to fix) and some teens; are they somehow superior because of that?

Don't be ignorant people.

When you put the whole quote up, it shows just how savvy and perceptive this analyst really is:

But it's more than the name that bothers Goodman, who went on to state that Nintendo has made it tougher than it had to for itself with the new name: "You're building everything from scratch in terms of awareness and in terms of building a brand. Verses Xbox 360--you're taking the core Xbox brand and leveraging it to a new product. With PlayStation 3, it still has all those great attributes of the PlayStation."

Funny, but I don't recall an earlier Nintendo Revolution so how exactly would Wii have a harder time with brand recognition then Revolution would?  The answer is, to the average consumer, it wouldn't.  Both names do not derive from previous systems so they would be equally recognizable/unrecognizable to them.  Most likely they will simply notice the word Nintendo.

Yeah I really hope Nintendo blows us away with what ever secret Wii games they've been working on.
I'm still planning on buying the Wii because I have to have my Mario, Zelda, and Metroid fix.
But the average consumer's buying decision relies on more than Nintendo's first party titles.
I sincerely hope that for Nintendo's sake, they have enough at E3 to steal some of both Sony's and M$'s thunder.
Oh this news is very relevant to the Xbox brand because it's regarding the upcoming next gen console wars.
I hope the mods don't take your post too seriously.

Lose your fears, the mods are not promoting an Xbox competitor in any way.
It's quite the opposite given what this piece of news is all about, if anything, it's damaging Nintendo.

PEOPLE -- Xantium and the X-S crew have done surveys of the X-S community of what we want them to post news-wise. They also listen to emails and the forums on what people do and don't want them to post.

One thing that comes to mind is about the time the Xbox 360 released in America, last November, there was a Poll on with what kind of information would we like to start seeing on Xbox-Scene since the Xbox 360 was coming out. The options were like:

A) Only Xbox 360-related information and news
cool.gif Xbox and Xbox 360 information and news
C) Xbox 360 info and news and particularly interesting news on other things current and next-gen
D) Just keep it the way it is -- Xbox and Xbox 360 news and information as well as significant other related information.

This is just an example and it's not a spot-on recognition on my part either.

The point is, if you're expecting strictly 360 related news/information posts and/or strictly only Xbox and Xbox 360 news and info than I'm sorry but you're only going to be disappointed -- The X-S community as a whole prefers news posts like this WII Nintendo one in addition to 360 related news and information.

I was just letting those know who may be new to this community and/or just didn't know.

I hope this clears it up for you.

That's like Nike making a new shoe and not putting the word Nike in front of it. You think a shoe called Air would sell if people didn't know it was a Nike or if it didn't have the SWOOSH?
You got Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, and Wii.... See the word Nintendo in there? As I said before the word Nintendo is synonymous with video games. Take that out and it'd be like "blading"... people who love to roller skate wouldn't know wtf blading is with out the word roller infront of it. Not that the average person wont know that Nintendo makes the Wii.(didn't even try for that pun) If they wanted all the attention on the games they wouldn't have renamed it. In the end I dont see them dropping the Nintendo like they say they will.

LOL I can just imagine all the japs going into their local game store and asking for a Re... "I ranna Re!"

I think the tag line for the Wii should be, "this is the revolution".

"Wii ™ will prevail, and so will the Lemon Party ™"

 April 27th, 2006
Earlier today Nintendo announced to the world that the eagerly anticipated "Nintendo Revolution" will now be called the "Nintendo Wii".
Met with shock and large amounts of criticism, many see the new console name as a mere mockery of what Nintendo once was, and is a sure fire indicator that Nintendo has lost touch with the gaming community.
However, if you thought Wii was a shocker, you may want to sit down. Nintendo has now decided to call their "Mario Party" series "Lemon Party".

"Apparently America is so brain-washed by their rightist-nazi president that they can't embrace homosexuality like we here at Nintendo can - so we decided to truely embrace total homosexuality... How many people in America can say they have pulled thier Wii's out and played Lemon Party with all their friends?"

In another predictable move, Nintendo is now considering arbitrarily endangering more potential success. Nintendo is now considering renaming the "DS" to "SE", and their own corporate identity to GOAT.

"We here at Nintendo dont visit shock sites to scare our friends... we like to stare at them and admire the amount of courage it takes to, say, spread one's cheeks to show the amount of damage the giver has caused".

2006 could be the year Nintendo (or Goat) shows everyone GoatSE, Lemon Party, A tiny little Wii, and a better attitude towards homosexuality.

And judging a not even released system by it's name is quite close minded...

Where not judging the system were saying the name is shit.

As if i'm gonna be going 'so who has a wee or why or whatever it is', they said it would stop confusion. "No confusion. " sif, maybe for the japs but not the rest of the world.

I think 'the console by nintendo with the shitty name' would be used more than Wii
