I don't really care about playing xbox games on the 40 gb drive, just linux.
....
Is it possible, without a PC and without a modchip, to make the 40 gb drive play xbox games?

Which do you want?

This is quick and unorganized, sorry:
Your options are:

Softmod the 40 gb
1) you need a computer that can run xboxhdm and has Parallel IDE. (A PC usually)
2) OR you can use a hard modded (chipped) xbox
3) Your drive must support locking.
4) The first 8gb of the drive will have to be xbox formatted (can't be used for linux)

Flash TSOP
1) You can flash the mobo bios to cromwell and not worry about locking and use the entire 40gb for linux.
2) You need a game exploit and exploitable game.
3) OR you could flash a hacked bios, then same as 4) above.

I found this link about how to format a new HD through FTP.  If I were to follow this procedure, would I be able to play xbox games on the 40 gb drive, assuming that I backed up the stock 8gb drive in the manner specified?

In other words, I don't have a Windows PC (only a Macintosh), I do have a softmodded xbox where I used the mechassault exploit and Kyrie's softmod installer (I'm sure that it's not "Kyrie's," but I am not at home and it's the popular one that starts with a "k").  I currently have evolutionX and x-dsl installed on the 8gb drive; as it stands, I can currently play xbox games.

Is it possible, without using a Windows PC and without purchasing a modchip, to backup all of the data from the 8 gb stock drive (by FTPing it to my Mac), remove the 8gb drive, install & format the 40 gb drive (using evoX booted from a CD and sending Raw FTP commands from my Mac), restore the data, and be able to both play xbox games and run linux?

Your mac may be able to access and lock an IDE drive, but I know little about macs. You could pick up any old PC, and use it to lock/setup an xbox drive (I would think a Pentium1 should work, pick one up for cheap)

A softmodded box doesn't help you unless you need a way to get an exploit onto a mem card.

You can't boot a burned/homebrew program without a mod, and an empty xbox hard drive does not make a modded xbox. If you were able to boot a CD, you should just use Slayers or AID to format.

If you have no way to access a xbox hard drive, you should read up on TSOP flashing, you need an exploitable game, a mem card, a modded xbox, (very) basic soldering ability and a computer to FTP.

Actually, you only need the ability to boot unsigned code (which a modded X-Box will do quite happily) and some way of getting files onto the console (FTP is fine). An exploitable game and memory card would be handy if the system wasn't already modded, but in your case all you need to do is copy the flashing program to your drive and run it (after making a couple of solder bridges on your motherboard).

The important thing is your X-Box version, as a 1.6 console can't be flashed. There are some guides in the tutorials section.

Forget about using Cromwell unless you don't want to play games with either of your drives. That BIOS is built for Linux, and only Linux. I quite like the X2 5035 though your TSOP might not be able to store that (it's 512kb, dunno much about which X-Box versions have which TSOP sizes, but a 1.0 box has 1mb)...

Once the console is flashed, use FTP to copy everything on your 8gb drive to your Mac. The X-Box won't require locked drives any more (so you can just install the 40gb), and will boot burns regardless as to what is on the HDD. There's an EvoX drive formatter ISO floating around somewhere (probably on X-Bins) that you can just burn to disc and slot in the drive, press a button, and have it create all the required partitions in just a few seconds. Being essentially an EvoX dash board it provides FTP support too, so you can then restore the backup you made from your Mac to the new drive.

Hey hey...I always miss that one...good point. Just copy on any exploit package designed for TSOP flashing and use a file manager to access it and launch. But as said, make sure you don't have a 1.6.

The drive is now locked, but not with a code the X-Box finds acceptable.

I assume you're being told the drive is no longer lockable because, well, you can't lock a locked drive.

Thanks, everyone, from helping me get from "dangerous n00b" to "slightly less dangerous n00b."

I've decided to go ahead and get a soldering iron - I've got a v1.3, and bridging two points on the topside of the motherboard shouldn't be too difficult.  Any links you could point me towards to help me choose the right bios size?

Make sure the bios is 256kb
I suggest x2 4981. Works fine and is customizable wth xbtool.

I decided to use a savegame exploit packaged with raincoat.  Evox displays the proper menu item, "Flash BIOS with Raincoat," and when I select that item, the "evolution x" screen with a large penguin in the middle of it shows up.

At this point, I am supposed to be able to telnet to the xbox and run raincoat.  Problem is, I can't connect via telnet to the box at this point.  I believe the problem is that I don't know the IP address it is supposed to respond to at this point, and perhaps it tries to switch to a different subnet mask.

Is there a way to change (or determine) the IP address that the Raincoat package is set to?

I just used 192.168.0.64 with the Splinter Cell exploit. Can't hurt to try it.

When you launch raincoat from Evox, it should show the penguin, the penguin should fade, then it should play some sound samples, and you should get a few lines of text at the top of the screen. Then telnet. If all you see is the penguin it's not loading properly for some reason.

Try launching the linux/raincoat xbe directly and see if it loads. If not try a fresh gamesave from xbins. If still no go you could try booting an eurasia disk (I haven't used it) or a Resctoox disk (I have used, works good)

Does this help at all? You don't need to use the mini-Linux build to copy files about, just for the flashing procedure. But it should give you some idea of how to use it.

Just one thing, I seem to remember that the telnet thingy starts you off in the "root" folder. You'll want to type "cd\mount" first off, from there you should be able to navigate quite easily (eg. "cd C" will then get you into C:, and so forth).

Note that when you use Raincoat to flash a BIOS, it puts up some details on the screen concerning your TSOP. I believe you can add support for your particular chip to the EvoX flasher by adding these to the INI file included. Perhaps someone has already posted the info you need somewhere online?

Is Linux loading properly? (As in my post above..)
If so, make sure your computer is connected with an IP in the correct subnet. ..192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0
