You can usually determine a PSP's firmware version by looking at its box.

ok so now i know what to look for in a psp dealing with firmware, but i now have a question about the exploit deal with gta. does it have to be that game or one that has a 1.50 update, because i noticed that death jr has a 1.50 update and i was just wandering since i am still new too all this and have no idea what im doint at the moment

it has to be GTA and an original copy before they fixed the exploit

your best bet is to buy a used PSP and a used GTA
