Hello I am looking to buy a psp and was wondering if the firmware varies out of the box, as I would like to be able to load homebrew on it. Thanks,

Actually nobody really proved that its not reliable:
Check at the serial number sticker, below the 120V text:
http://www.pspupdate...psp_version.jpg
If there's an A or nothing you'll probably get a 1.50 or lower.
If there's a B that means 1.51 or 1.52.
I believe the confusion about this method came up because originally it said "An A means 1.50 or lower" and some stupid people screamed "there's nothing below my 120V text and I still got 1.50".
So actually nobody reported that he/she got a 1.51/1.52 firmware in a nothing-or-A package, neither did anybody report that he/she got a 1.50 firmware in a B-package.

Well i think your chances are comming down prety low, I live in a medium sized town, and iver checkecd nearly every square inch and found no 1.50's, only B's on the boxes, which is 1.51+.

Thanks for all the input. Just to let you know my box has nothing under the 120V so it is likely possible to tell according the box.

So far all boxes with A's have proven to been 1.5's in my experience, the B's have all been 1.51/1.52's.
That's just the experience at my local store.
