You can use your Xbox Live account on your PC.

Most games offer free online. Some can be expensive. Just depends on your taste in gaming.

Friend accounts vary from game to game. But, with Steam and other systems like that, you can have a buddy list for a lot of games.

Quite a few of the games I play are free and have LAN support. I guess it just depends on what your into. I'm doubting an MMO would be very fun over LAN. I also prefer the PC over the 360 because the controls feel more accurate and many games let you map different functions to whatever key you wish.

Mostly all I play on PC is Countstrike:Source which can be bought for $10? through steam and gaming online is free. Everyone has a different system but generally are free.

Recently you could pick up a 1 year live card for $30, I've never paid per month. Though I dont have a gold account right now because I just dont have the time to play

Counterstrike is a good one. I just picked up the original one along with Blue Shift, Opposing Forces, Team Fortress, and Half-Life Deathmatch for $7.
