Xbox Issues! Please Help
« on: August 07, 2007, 10:42:00 AM »

I recently broke my hard drive and had to hotswap it, replace the C and E folders with those I got from SlaYers 2.7 release. I then re-inserted the xbox IDE and turned the xbox on.

After a while (over 1 minute) the ms dash loaded. Everything seemed fine other than the slow loading.

My first question is ***How can I make the loading of the dash go as fast as it is supposed to and does on my other xbox?***

I then turned the xbox off and loaded with the Eject button. The splash screen came on and seconds later the ms dash loaded as normal!

Second question **Why is this loading faster that when I power on with the power button?**

To test everything was working I put a game in and it did not work.

When I insert any game (the disks are absolutely pristeen condition and work on my other xbox) a message pops up saying...

"Your XBOX cant recognize this disc.
Make sure its and Xbox game, DVD movie, or audio CD.
Also check to see if the disk is dirty or damaged.
Remove disc to continue."

Third and final question **Why are the disks not being read?? Before I broke the hard drive trying to softmod it, the same xbox, same dvd drive read the same games and played them fine!**

Also if I cold boot with a game in the drive I get the same error message and it then loads to the msdash!

If it helps, my kernel version is 4817 and dash is 5960. I have access to slayers however obviously my dvd drive isn't working. I can also hot swap to a PC and exchange files that way!! I have an original MechAssault and am prepared to use a game save exploit to sort things out but again, DVD drive issues...

Thankyou all for your time and help! I will be on the forum almost all day and night trying to sort this out so please post at any time and with any tiny information! Anything and everything counts!

Thanks again... xbox.1824

Hi,

do you think you could test the dvd drive in your other xbox? Dvd drives are exchangeable, and it is just a question of removing and reconnecting 2 connectors. You could confirm that way that there is no problem with your dvd drive.

It is possible that you have a partial working softmod. That might explain why it boots much slower with the power button. It tries to load the unleashx dash. When that isn't succeeding, it will try to locate a dash on other locations which are common for dashboards.

You could check your E partition for a dash map. That should contain the unleashx dashboard.

Check your C partition for a bios folder. It should also contain a x0dash folder. Within that folder you should find xbox.xtf and ernie.xtf. If those 2 files somewhere exist on your c partition, you have pieces of your softmod on your harddisk. It is just a question to find the missing pieces.

Hi, ok well, in that case I will go open up my other xbox and switch out the drives. Is there anything I should know before hand? Easy way to remove it, where are the screws/torx screws etc...

If it is the fact that I have a partial soft mod on my hard drive can I simply load into xboxhdm and delete the two folders, replacing them with the two new default c and e folders?

Hi,

I suppose you could just delete the 2 folders and copy the stock back over.
If you would have a problem with your dvd drive, than it is possible that the other dvd drive will load Slayers of a cdrw or a dvd-r. That's why I am interested in knowing if the Dvd works or not.

In my case, the xboxhdm options did all the work for me. I didn't had to copy over anything myself. I even read a rumour in a threat that sometimes a E partition created with xboxhdm can become corrupt. They suggested to reformat the E partition and copy the files back over afterwards.
You shouldn't worry about that right now.

Just unscrew the xbox bottom screws so that you can lift the top cover. The dvd and harddisk frame are also screwed to the case with a couple of screws. They are all Torx scrws as you might know already.

You need to unscrew 6 screws from the bottom. The dvd and harddisk frame are fixed with 3 screws.

Hi. Ok well after some unscrewing I got the problem DVD drive out but now Ive just ripped open my nice new xbox the torx screwdriver wont fit the 2 torx screws around the dvd drive. I cannot believe my luck.

The dvd drive in my new xbox is Samsung and my broken xbox is Philips.

Shall I hotswap my new xbox, load into xboxhdm, view the files in the c and e folders and then replicate that via slayers etc... and put it on a disk and use that disk to copy over to my other drive??

I really hope to god I don't mess this hard drive up too but I think its worth looking at the c and e folders so I know what I should be copying across... What do you guys think?

Reply asap please. thanks

Hi,

don't start messing with your working xbox. Work things out one xbox at a time.

I pm'd you with the C stock file structure.

Samsung and Philips dvd drives are also exchangable. Maybe you can disconnect the dvd cables and connect the other dvd without removing the original from it's case.

Ok, sorry for the gap in posting but I had alot to do last night. I have worked out the problem and will describe it below along with the answer.

I hope this can help anyone who gets the same problem as I did.

The problem/errors.

When I booted my xbox (softmodded or not it makes no difference at this point) with the power button it would take an unreasonable time to load the ms dash. First the XBOX splash screen came up and then the white microsoft text and the dash would load.

To be honest that wasn't a huge issue but still, it was an issue.

To make things more confusing, when I booted with the eject button the Xbox loaded straight away,

The next problem I encountered was that whenever I tried to load a game (disks absolutely perfect) I would get the below Error message. (This occured with cold boots and loading from msdash)

"Your XBOX cant recognize this disc.
Make sure its and Xbox game, DVD movie, or audio CD.
Also check to see if the disk is dirty or damaged.
Remove disc to continue."

*********

The problems above are caused by the DVD drive. Prepare to have to get a new one (sorry but you will have to).

If any of you are getting the same problems as I did you may want to continue reading as it should help...

To fix this (thanks goes to obcd) I switched out the DVD drives. Luckily I had another drive from another xbox (it wasn't that simple for me really but thats all you need do)

As the xbox drives are practically interchangeable, no real difference will be seen by the xbox. It will boot the dvd drive as any other normal XBOX drive. You can also use pc drives that are known to work on xboxes, look around the forum to find out which ones.

Once I switched the drives round and booted up the xbox the problem seemed to have gone. The loading times were normal for the dash and it would read every disk I threw at it.

Another thing to note, my broken drive that originally ran on the xbox in question was Philips. The new drive I put in to use was Samsung. ANY xbox DVD drive brands work!

Hope the above helps people, I know it would have saved me 2 days of work!

As the above ^^ probably explained. I now have no DVD drive (the one I used to check the problems was not mine permanently).

I am now in about 16 feet of sh..... (you get what I mean).

The xbox that turned out to have a broken DVD drive was not mine for the keeping. Its a present for my brother or atleast, it was.

I ended up buying it on ebay for about £80 games and controllers too.

The thing is, I am now poor and still I have to give him this xbox as promissed for his birthday in 2 weeks nearly. Of course, I cannot give him a broken DVD-less xbox.

Is there any way I can fix this dvd drive?

If not,

Does anybody have a spare dvd drive lying around that is not needed?

It would mean the world to me if you guys can help me out. I am so tired from endless work on this xbox to now find out I have a broken DVD.

Please give it your best shot at helping me out. My personal deadline is 21st August.

Lets hope its sorted by then. Thanks guys
