is that even possible? I was under the assumption that the original xbox was extremely picky about which dvd drives it uses

I should be able to update the bios with a custom one that excepts the hybrd dvd drive. The first thing i will do is run the updated linux and see if it will recognize the drive. My other apporach will be to HOT SWAP the drive under diffrent dashboards and linux. anyways I ave a lot to do and no suggestions, so if you would please give some to the knowledge that you know what your talking about then have at it.

as normal I have no clue what i'm talking about so i'm out of this discussion (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

but if you managed to get this working, that would make one sweet media player addition to xbmc

yes that one does, I am getting size and Dimensions for the unit right now, and I will order it on wed.  This project should take about 2 weeks. I have found 5 with ide connections and 2 that have the same dimensions as the hitachi drive, so it should fit nice. I found 1 with a loading tray but so.... pictures coming soon!!

not to rain on your parade, but the (original) xbox doesn't have enough CPU power or RAM to decode 720p x.264 (bluray/hd-dvd rips), let alone full 1080p VC-1, AVC, or MPEG-2.  And, while you should be able to get the drive recognized as a cd/dvd drive fairly easily, you'll have no way to read bluray discs since the file system would not be recognized (hd-dvd uses the same UDF file system as regular dvds).

you maybe right but I did see this

(IMG:http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/hp_hd100.jpg)

a standalone HD DVD player with it's own processor and decoder.

and I can try to use a converter like this one which has been said to work and tested on a XBOX with a 1TB drive.

(IMG:http://www.addonics.com/products/io/images/adsaide_write_blocking.gif)

another thing that should speed up the system significatly is power adapters for the major parts, like the Hard drive and dvd drive. standalone power supplys for the HD and dvd should help.

This should be a fun two weeks, I have a lot of time for my vacation and just about an infinite amount of money at my disposal for anything i want to do. keep the suggestions coming.

I can't see it working myself. That drive will probably only be compatible with a windows based OS. How is the Xbox gonna know to stop decoding and let the players own decoder and processor take over? Obviously some sort of command is gonna have to come from the drive to let the OS know it needs to decode a HD-DVD.

I could be wrong as i'm not an expert on this.

You will have to search for the user, but there is someone on this board that specialises in ram and cpu upgrades on the xbox just like the dreamboxes they use to make.  If you were able to have them do that for you then the xbox should have no problems decoding HD.

Not likely to work (nearly well enough to be worth it) without upgraded CPU power. If the other drive has some form of decoding built in you MIGHT be able to get it working under linux but that's it, unless you can get the XBMC team to write a special interface. Does it use USB? not going to work at all then.

And what is the write blocker all about?

even with a 1.4GHz CPU and 128MB RAM, it's only enough to do 720p x264.  No way it could decode/play back full 1080p hd-dvd/bluray properly

720p is perfect quality for me.  after working on this for the last day and a half it looks like the project is going into the direction of a standalone HD-DVD Full player with not only an encoder but with a decoder.

like this
(IMG:http://www.hometheatermag.com/images/archivesart/1006gear.2.jpg)

power supply is easy
encoder/decoder chip on the same board.
audio output!!!!!!
it's own processor!!

now i just have to make room for the decoder...
