The Oxford911 firewire chipset in this enclosure initially did not support ATA-6 (or hard drives over 137GB).  Interesting reading.  It may have been patched to allow Maxtor drives to work properly, but chokes on other ATA devices like DVD-ROM drives.

The USB2 chipset may suffer from the same problem.  You already touched on my first suggestion: Upgrade the firmware of the enclosure.

DRIVER - this might be a starting point.

Thanks for the links Perplexer ! After doing some more reading I found you were right about my firmware only supporting ATA-5. I downloaded a firmware update for the Oxford 911 thats supposed to add support for ATA-6. I also found the Oxford Flash Utility for my chipset but it seems I'm SOL. The flash utility only recognizes the chipset through Firewire (which I don't have) not USB.  There appears to be a hardware hack on the pcb out in the wild somewhere for support of any drive...just can't seem to find any info other than that. sad.gif
